As joyful and festive as Christmas can be, it can also be one of the most emotionally difficult times of the year — especially when we’re missing loved ones who are no longer here to celebrate with us.
I wanted to share this message because I personally understand that deep feeling of sadness and emptiness that can surface during the holidays. Having lost my mother just two years ago, I know how hard it can be to find joy in this season.
Grief is not something that simply disappears — and perhaps it’s not meant to. It’s a reflection of love that continues even in absence. But over time, I’ve learned small ways to gently look forward and find moments of peace and meaning during this special time, especially with those who are still here beside me
💛 Suggestions for Coping with Grief During Christmas
Acknowledge Your Feelings
It’s okay not to feel merry all the time. Give yourself permission to experience sadness, longing, or even moments of joy — all of these can coexist.
Create a Memory Ritual
Light a candle, hang an ornament, or set a special place at the table in honor of your loved one. These small acts can bring comfort and keep their memory close. My mums ashes which are in a little black bird urn have prime spot on my table
Simplify Your Traditions
If old traditions feel painful, allow yourself to change them. You can create new ones that feel right for where you are now emotionally.
Reach Out for Support
Spend time with people who understand, or join a support group. Talking about your loss can ease the loneliness of grief.
Do Something in Their Honor
Donate, volunteer, or perform an act of kindness in their memory. It can help transform grief into something meaningful. Every November I take part in a Walk for Brain Cancer day in memory of my mother
Take Time for Yourself
Rest when you need to. It’s okay to say no to gatherings or step away when things feel overwhelming.
Remember Love Still Lives On
Grief is the shadow of love — it’s a sign of how deeply you cared. Try to focus on gratitude for the love you shared, even as you miss their presence
