Dr. Gerty Cori, the first woman in history to win a Nobel Prize in Medicine, was born on this day in 1896. Her groundbreaking research paved the way for understanding and developing treatments for diabetes and other metabolic diseases. Even after discovering the Cori Cycle, one of the body's most important metabolic pathways, however, she was still paid 1/10 the salary her husband and research partner, Carl, received by Washington University in St. Louis.
