A conversation could change a life. Ask R U OK?, Listen, Encourage action and Check in.

Life has its ups and downs, and it’s easy to fall into the trap of only sharing your highlight real with others. The reality is that it’s okay to not be okay, to be vulnerable and ask for help.

In a year when many of us have faced challenges we’re more likely than ever to hear “No, I’m not OK” - and when we do, it’s important we listen, and do our best to be there for those who are asking for help.

We all go through it, it’s normal, but we also know that men aren’t always the greatest at starting the conversation.

However if someone else starts the conversation for them - whether that be by simply reaching out or sharing their own stories - it can make things a little easier.

Check in on your friends, on your family, or even on a stranger, ask how they’re doing and if they’re okay. Most importantly, don’t forget to take a moment to ask yourself as well.

After more?  has plenty of content on how to start the conversation. Also check out our IGTV podcast series ‘Man Chats’ where we talk to a variety of people who have been directly affected by mental health challenges, and through their experiences, provide some wisdom into how we can better look after ourselves and those we care about.

Life has its ups and downs, and it’s easy to fall into the trap of only sharing your highlight real with others. The reality is that it’s okay to not be okay, to be vulnerable and ask for help.

If you’re going through a tough time, confide in your inner circle, and ask them for help.

If you find yourself getting overwhelmed by how you’re feeling, ask for help, chat to somebody, see a psychologist.

The same way in which we see a doctor when we’re feeling sick, or we see a physio when we’ve injured ourselves, if you find yourself struggling with your mental health, it makes sense to seek professional help and see a psychologist.

Asking for help does not show that you are weak and unable to cope, or that you are somehow inadequate. It instead shows your intelligence, integrity and self-awareness; you know and can see your strengths and weaknesses.

Question for you:
When’s the last time you checked in with your mental health?

At times, it can be quite difficult for someone to be vulnerable and speak up about how they’re truly feeling. As a listener, it’s important to be mindful around how you act when someones does reach out, as it can make all the difference in how that person is left feeling after the conversation.

Everyone experiences mental health challenges at some time in their lives, and it’s vital not to underestimate the importance of simply being there for someone.

Tips on talking and listening:

Listen carefully to what they are saying. Encourage them to talk about what is really going on for them and how they are feeling. Try not to interrupt while they are talking and leave any comments or queries you may have until they have finished.

Let them know you are thankful that they have talked to you about what they are going through, and that you understand how hard it is to talk to someone about how they are feeling. Reassure them that they have taken a positive step by talking about what they are going through.

Remember, you don’t have to have all the right answers, you just need to be there to listen, and help in whatever capacity you can.

Between the ages of 16 and 35, men have to successfully navigate some of the most formative and challenging times of their lives. Major decisions across education, career, family, health, finances, friendships and social circles must all be made and the world we live in doesn’t make them easy.

Unfortunately, many men aren’t handling this as well as they could. Our mission is to support this cohort of men in proactively developing their mental health and wellbeing through a strong sense of Self Leadership.

Although we’re called “For Men” - our content is not just for men, but all of the people who care for them. We’ve had many females get involved in our workshops, community events and panels and it’s been great seeing everyone come together to support.

It’s important that we take our physical and mental fitness seriously.

Whether it be a walk, a run, pushing some weights around at the gym, playing sport or practising yoga; incorporating an element of exercise into our daily routines can help improve both our physical and mental health through and increased release of endorphins (our brains feel-good neurotransmitters) - oh and you’ll also look better naked, which we all love.

Question for you: are you exercising enough? How can you incorporate exercise into your daily routine?

**food for thought**

Walk’n’talk meetings, waking up earlier to make time, 10 mins of stretching before bed, walk to get your morning coffee, do it with a friend

Mental Health.. it’s an often misused term. The reality is, we’ve all got mental health. It’s when we don’t proactively take care of our mental health, that mental health challenges may arise.

For each individual, their approach to staying mental well is different. Consistent exercise, journaling, eating clean, daily gratitudes, meditation, prioritising a hobby, finding purpose in your work or spending quality time with friends and family.

There’s no one size fits all, which also means you’ve gotta take the time to work out what it is that keeps you mentally well.

Question for you:

Are you doing what you need to be doing on a daily/weekly basis to stay mentally well? Do your priorities need to perhaps shift to ensure that you are?

If you’re a frequent flyer, you’ve heard it time and time again.. - “in the case of an emergency, be sure fit your own oxygen mask before helping others.”

Similarly, it’s important to remember to take care of our own mental health before we direct our energy towards helping those we care for. It’s in our nature to want to do the best for others, but it should never be at the expense of your own wellbeing.

If you end up burning out yourself due to a lack of “oxygen” - you won’t be able to continue to help those you care for.

Question for you: Are you investing enough time and energy into developing your own mental health?

If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there…

It won’t take you long to find all sorts of advice on how to be successful. Problem is, unless you’ve defined success for yourself, it’s basically impossible to know which advice to take, which advice to consider and which advice to throw away outright.

Spend some time to understand where it is you want to be in 10 years, then reverse engineer to figure out where you should be in 5 years, then in 3 years.

Once you’ve got that clarity, you can then set some clear goals for the next 12-months to move you tangibly closer to your own version of success.

Question for you: do you know what success actually is for you?
