💪 THE ROTATOR CUFF! 💪

🧐 WHAT IS IT?
It's a group of 4 shoulder muscles - supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor and subscapularis

🙋‍♀️ WHAT DOES IT DO?
The rotator cuff provides ACTIVE stability of the shoulder joint. From a bony perspective, the shoulders ball and socket joint is quite shallow, kind of like a golfball on a tee ⛳️ Therefore, stability relies heavily on these muscles.

😥 WHAT CAN GO WRONG?
Tears, weakness, overload or poor neuromuscular control of the rotator cuff complex can lead to pain. This is called termed 'Rotator Cuff Related Pain Syndrome' (RCRPS).

Pain often presents around the top and side of the shoulder +/- referral down the outside of the shoulder. Painful movements include reaching above shoulder height, rotation and reaching behind your back.

🤸‍♀️ HOW CAN PHYSIO HELP?
If RCRPS is confirmed (normally through a series of tests + a thorough subjective assessment), your physio will give you specific and functional exercises to help you get back on track! Simple activation, motor patterning and strengthening exercises can help reduce pain and improve function.

BACK PAIN IS MULTI-FACTORIAL! 🕵️‍♀️

Ever wondered how it was possible to hurt your back picking a light object up from the ground? It's so common to feel back pain doing a seemingly innocuous activity that you've done thousands of times before.

No, it's not because flexion is bad for your spine or because of 'bad posture'! It's usually due to a combination of factors that lead to that one activity becoming painful. A bad night's sleep, a stressful week at work, an emotional or anxious event, not enough recovery time following a heavy gym session, a sudden increase in demand on your body in the weeks leading up to that moment... all these factors can cumulate in your back becoming more vulnerable within an activity, and therefore painful.

🌿 Noone knows your body and your pain experience like you do 🌿

Learning how to tap into your parasympathetic nervous system can help reduce your pain. Learning about pain science will empower you to take control of your condition. The pain experience is complex - you can have pain with tissue damage and pain without any damage at all. Beliefs, past experience, the environment, sleep nutrition and your overall physical and mental health are major drivers in how you experience pain.

Check out some of the above strategies! For a more tailored management plan, book in with one of our physiotherapists. We are pain experts!

Sore knees? Our physios are experts in knee injuries. Combined with taking a thorough history, they use a series of physical tests that can indicate the source of your pain. They then create a treatment plan based on your needs - whether it be returning to running, going up and down stairs with ease or preparing for the ski season.

Book in to see one of our physios today! Call us on 9650 4149 or book online via our website (link in bio)
