Ok, ok, last one β˜€οΈ

πŸ‹ A student was generous with a couple of home grown grapefruits and I got to enjoy both the fruit and the peels.

Peel the grapefruit skin, avoiding as much of the pith (the white layer) as possible, dry well, steep in oil, wait, strain and enjoy.

I used jojoba oil in this case for that extra moisturizing lushness for my skin πŸ€—

Grapefruit oil extract is packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, helps brighten skin, support collagen and similar to other citrus oils, is credited with mood boosting abilities (uuummm yes please)

That it. No more projects and side quests to quickly finish before I take time off! Feeling hella accomplished 🀩

I am in my 'finishing all projects' era! πŸ˜†
Also seems to be in the 'I can make reels from pics' era

Either way, lovely Calendula flowers picked, dried and steeped in sweet almond oil for about 8 weeks, strained and bottled (the last pic jas two concoctions in them, more in next post). 🌼

Calendula is wonderful in the garden! Easily self seeds, wonderful for pollinators, adds colour and beauty, edible and medicinal.
This oil can be used in various cosmetic applications, but is especially good for cracked and dry skin. I will be making gardeners balm as well as gifting it to my nieces for the upcoming northern hemisphere winter (whenever it decides to show up)

Perhaps I'll write a blog post about this process and how to make it at home qith zero experiwnce or equipment and very little time to invest...
Would you like to know more about this simple and achievable remedy?

🌈 Remember our Qu**rs in the Garden day? Well, let me tell you, it was wonderful!

We gathered in on Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung lands, shared honest conversations, personal experiences, plant knowledge and a love for nature. It was a joy to be in this lush space, with colourful blossoms, plenty of birds and pollinators and members of our community coming together to connect generously. 🌸🌼☘️

Did I mention I love my job?? πŸ€—

Thank you all for coming along and especially .pineapple.apple.jam for organizing and for helping me on the day and taking these lovely photos

Joy in a jar

Quick pickle from our last Growing Together session
Such a delight to see everyone collaborating on making these simple pickled vegetables. Choosing vinegars, balancing salt and sugar and adding various aromats. And the best bit? They're ready to enjoy within hours of making and add a punch of flavour to every meal.

This jar has a mix of radish, purple onion, carrot and zucchini and is flavoured with black pepper, mustard, coriander and fennel seeds

Remember the compost from the other post?
Well, a day later I found this raised planter on the nature strip near my home. Perfect match!
A nice layer of mulch and a handfull of seeds, and we're ready to roll.

The yellow paint is leftover from an old job and will assist with the upcoming scorching summer sun.

I love a good thrifty project 😁

Gardening doesn't have to be perfect to be nurishing.
My compost routine is wildly simple, a bit messy and absolutely "That'll Do"

It works for me, and it might be just the right one for you.

This creative DIY compost sifter uses bicycle wheels and wire mesh to separate fine compost from larger debris. 🚲🌿 The rotating design allows easy turning using a bike pedal, making the sifting process efficient and even fun. Built with simple wood supports, it’s a great upcycling idea for gardeners who want smooth, nutrient-rich soil for planting. 🌱πŸ’ͺ

Cook with what you have πŸŽ‰

I was very happy to have access to some broadbeans today! Supplemented by young broadbean leaves and tops (cut from our green manure crop) and a bunch of my bolting parsley that I am trying to use while it's still good.

I don't cook with recipes and am terrible and remembering quantities... but have enough experience to allow my intuition to lead the way and mainly I am not attached to a specific outcome.
It will be a pesto, it will be good.

Bit of this, bit of that, start small and add as you go (always remember, it's easier to add than to remove...)

Being playful and curious and giving yourself permission to experiment is my favorite way to learn.
