Occupational Therapy continues to evolve with the world around us.

Digital health. Telehealth. Assistive technology. Smarter assessment tools. Greater accessibility.

Modern changes have not replaced the core of OT. They have strengthened it.

At its heart, Occupational Therapy is still about participation. Independence. Meaningful engagement in everyday life.

What has changed is how we deliver support. We can now reach more people, tailor interventions more precisely and integrate technology to enhance safety, function and choice.

Progress in practice means greater opportunity for the people we support.

Still buzzing from an incredible 3 days at the Australian Institute of Sport ❤️

Had the opportunity to coach at camp with the Australian Men's Blind Football Team and honestly… I was geeking out the whole time just being immersed in that high performance environment. Living on site, surrounded by elite sport, was such a privilege (and yes… the buffet breakfasts, lunches and dinners will definitely be missed 😅).

Working with these athletes was something special. I genuinely believe they have superpowers. Playing football with vision impairment brings a completely different dimension to the game, relying on heightened senses, awareness, and the ability to filter out distractions and lock into the right stimulus. It’s incredible to witness and be part of.

Beyond training, the group are just an amazing bunch of humans. So much respect for the way they show up, work hard and support each other. We’re now building towards the Asian Championships in Osaka, Japan next month. Up the boys! 🇦🇺⚽️

I absolutely love working in this space.

Technology is not just convenience. For many people with disabilities, it is access. It is independence. It is opportunity.

From assistive communication devices to smart home systems and telehealth, modern innovation is breaking down barriers that once limited participation in daily life.

When used intentionally, technology can increase choice, safety, confidence and connection.

Progress is not just about advancement. It is about inclusion.

If you or someone you support is exploring assistive technology, the right assessment and guidance can make all the difference.

Technology is not just convenience. For many people with disabilities, it is access. It is independence. It is an opportunity.

Such a great catch up with the teams from RPM Allied Health and Westside Support Services ❤️

Conversations like this remind me what our industry is all about. Collaboration, sharing knowledge, learning from each other, and supporting one another so we can continue to provide the best outcomes for individuals with disability. And of course, sharing a few laughs along the way.

Thank you Alex and the team, it was so lovely to connect with you all!

We are more connected than ever. Yet many adults feel more isolated, overwhelmed and disconnected from themselves.

Modern life moves fast. Constant notifications. Productivity pressure. Online comparison. Fewer deep, meaningful conversations. Less community.

Over time, this can impact our relationships, our sense of belonging and even our sense of purpose.

Mental health is not just about managing stress. It is about connection. Community. Meaning.

If you have been feeling stretched, disconnected or unsure of your direction, you are not alone. Small intentional shifts toward real connection and clearer boundaries can make a powerful difference.

Save this as a reminder to check in with yourself this week.

Children today are growing up in a world that looks very different from the one we knew.

More screens. Less unstructured play. Busier schedules. Faster stimulation. Earlier pressure.

These modern shifts are shaping how children develop socially, emotionally and cognitively. Some changes bring opportunity. Others mean we need to be more intentional about protecting movement, connection and real world play.

Development does not just happen. It is built through relationships, boredom, problem solving and shared experiences.

Awareness is the first step. Small changes at home can make a powerful difference.

I had the privilege of visiting the very first 3D printed SDA home in Australia and it was incredible to see in person. The entire house was built in about 10 weeks which is amazing when you think about how long traditional builds usually take.

The design, accessibility features and finish were impressive. It really makes you wonder if this could be the next generation of housing, especially in the NDIS SDA space where faster, more adaptable and more affordable options are needed.

Is this the future of building? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

This activity focused on play, creativity and shared decision making. We used a simple ping pong game and turned it into something meaningful by introducing structured rules, taking turns and adding a fun reward. Every time the child had a successful turn, they got to press the truck horn which made the game even more exciting.

The best part was creating the rules together. I introduced the basic structure and the child added their own ideas. Giving children the freedom to create rules helps build ideation, decision making and creativity. A playful, open environment lets them explore their ideas while learning how to work with others, which supports classroom participation, group activities and everyday social situations.

Throughout the game the child practised emotional regulation, resilience, confidence, turn taking and communication. Positive feedback helped the child build a stronger sense of self and pride in their efforts.

Small games often lead to big learning moments.

Today’s session featured a fun little obstacle course using a scooter board, cones and a ball. The child worked on upper body strength, core stability and coordination while moving through the course, which all play an important role in preparing for fine motor tasks like writing, cutting and using both hands together.

Scooter board activities are supported in paediatric therapy because they build postural control, shoulder stability and body awareness. These areas form the foundation for later fine motor development. Adding a ball-shooting challenge brought in quick decision making, visual tracking, hand eye coordination and a bit of healthy competitiveness while the OT caught each ball.

A simple setup with a lot of therapeutic value and plenty of fun.

Today’s session was all about choice, confidence and sensory exploration. Before we started, we explored what recipe the child wanted to learn and the child chose cucumber and avocado sushi. Since the family prefers rice paper over nori, we made a half and half batch: some rolls with nori and some with rice paper. The rice paper version was definitely more challenging, but the child’s motivation and autonomy made all the difference.

This activity opened up so many opportunities to build skills. The child explored a range of textures like sticky sushi rice, mushy avocado and crunchy cucumber, which supported sensory processing. At the same time the child worked on problem solving, emotional regulation, impulse control, decision making, planning, organising, prioritising and multitasking.

To support the child’s success, we have prepared a visual recipe with simplified steps so the child could follow along at their own pace.

Such a fun, meaningful way to build everyday independence through cooking.

Today’s session was packed with hands-on learning. We made our funnel completely from scratch. You’ll see in the video that the child drew a circle, cut along the line, taped it together and created the final funnel. Each step supported fine motor skills, bilateral coordination, problem solving and creativity.

Along the way, he asked for help when things got tricky. This was a great moment to support expressive communication and confidence in seeking assistance when needed.

We then used the funnel with a straw to blow a fluffy ball, which also helped us explore energy levels, breath control and body awareness. Turning it into a game added teamwork, turn taking, resilience, following instructions and social interaction.

Simple activity, big functional gains.

🎥 Day 1: Yesterday at Therapeak I attended training on the Allen Cognitive Level Screen (ACLS‑6) (6th Edition) conducted by Loren Pordage. This version introduces updated tasks and reflects the ongoing evolution of assessment in the Cognitive Disability Model (CDM) originally developed by Claudia K. Allen.

Claudia Allen described cognition as a person’s global ability to function, “everything the person says and does, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.” In other words, cognition isn’t just memory or thinking, it’s how we process information, attend, respond, and act in daily life. According to her model, critical components include:

• Aroused attention (are we alert and responsive?)
• Sustained attention (can we keep focus over time?)
• Information-processing speed (how quickly do we take in, interpret and act?)

This training has been a meaningful investment (yes, the ACLS-6 requires 12 months of preparation!) and I’m excited about applying it at Therapeak. By using this tool, we strengthen our capacity to evaluate and tailor interventions for clients whose cognitive processing, sensorimotor function or functional cognition may be challenged. The goal? To support real-life participation, independence and safe engagement in meaningful activities.

Thanks to Loren Pordage and the ACLS-6 training team for this opportunity 🚀
