Stigma continues to be a major barrier to treatment for mental health and addiction issues, taking many forms along the way.

As healthcare providers, it’s crucial to recognise how stigma manifests in our services and take actionable steps toward creating a more inclusive environment.

πŸ”· Modules 6 and 7 of the Hamilton Centre Integrated Care Training Program focus on understanding and addressing stigma, grounded in foundational definitions and current research.

93% of participants reported learning something new, and 86% said they felt more confident in their skills!

Sign up today to deepen your understanding of the double stigma faced by people living with both mental illness and substance use conditions. You’ll explore the five components of stigma, the seven different types, and examine its impact at individual, interpersonal and service levels.

Plus, you’ll gain practical strategies to help build more welcoming healthcare environments.

🌐 Today we recognise the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, a reminder of the importance of creating inclusive futures for women and girls across science, technology and innovation.

While progress has been made, women remain underrepresented in these fields. According to United Nations data, in 2022 women accounted for just 31.1% of researchers globally, highlighting the work still needed to close gender gaps and expand opportunities.

At the Hamilton Centre, we're proud to support and work alongside researchers who are improving addiction and mental health care, contributing to a more integrated, sustainable and inclusive health system.

We're pleased to welcome Patrick Huang, our new PhD student at the Hamilton Centre!

Under the supervision of Hamilton Centre Clinical Director A/Prof Shalini Arunogiri and The Matilda Centre’s Prof Katherine Mills, Patrick's PhD will explore how integrated care for people experiencing both mental illness and substance use is understood, delivered and assessed within Victorian mental health services.

β€œI'm using a mixed-methods approach and plan to collaborate with clinicians, consumers, carers, peer workers and service leaders to explore current practice, barriers and enablers. The goal is to identify practical indicators of quality and safety and generate insights that can strengthen integrated care and inform future service improvement,” he explains.

With a 97% satisfaction rate, we’ve officially wrapped up our workshops for 2025!

This year, our small but dedicated Central team had the opportunity to connect with more than 400 mental health and AOD workers across metro and regional Victoria. Each session offered rich discussions and practical learning to support clinicians in their vital work.

In a few regional locations, we were also honoured to be welcomed by local Aboriginal communities. The Welcome to Country ceremonies shared culture and stories that shaped the day and reminded us of the importance of connection, respect and inclusion in the work we do.

We’re grateful to every participant, presenter and clinical partner who contributed to making this year’s workshops such a success.
