Every day we swallow food, liquids, medicine and saliva. People who have trouble swallowing are at risk of poor nutrition and dehydration, while babies and children may not take in enough nutrients to support growth and brain development.

What can be done to relieve dysphagia symptoms and ensure swallowing is easier and safer?

1. Exercises can sometimes help to improve the muscles used to swallow.
2. Thickening fluids can sometimes make drinking safer.
3. Environmental and postural changes can be made to improve the safety of a swallow.
4. Altering the texture of the diet can sometimes make eating safer.
5. Mealtime partners can be trained to support the person with dysphagia to enjoy mealtimes and enhance their quality of life and independence.

It is Swallowing Awareness Day today Wednesday 18 March 2026!

Swallowing is an essential part of everyday life, and many people have swallowing difficulties, known as Dysphagia. Swallowing is a reflex and humans on average swallow between 500–700 times a day.

Speech pathologists help to treat people with dysphagia by:

1. Completing detailed and accurate assessments
2. Providing an accurate diagnosis of dysphagia, which may assist with a medical diagnosis
3. Ensuring safety (reducing or preventing aspiration) with regards to swallowing function
4. Balancing risk factors with quality of life, taking into account the individual’s preferences and beliefs
5. Working with other health professionals, particularly dietitians, to optimise nutrition and hydration
6. Stimulating improved swallowing with oral motor/sensory exercises, swallow techniques and positioning.

Speech Pathology Week Day 7: Independence through Communication 🌟

Communication is at the heart of independence. It’s how we make choices, share ideas, build relationships, and take part in daily life.

Speech pathologists help people develop the communication skills they need for lifelong independence, from a child learning to ask for what they need, to a teenager preparing for school and work, to an adult navigating healthcare or social situations.

Every step towards stronger communication is a step towards greater independence, confidence, and participation in the world. Because when people can communicate, they can take control of their lives. 💙

Speech Pathology Week Day 6: Wellbeing through Communication 🌿

Communication isn’t just about words it’s about connection, belonging, and emotional wellbeing. 🌏

Speech pathologists support people to express their feelings, build relationships, and connect with others in meaningful ways. Whether it’s a child learning to share their emotions, a person finding their voice after illness, or someone using alternative communication to stay connected, communication plays a vital role in mental health and overall wellbeing.

When people are able to express themselves and feel understood, they experience greater confidence, connection, and happiness. Because supporting communication is also supporting wellbeing. 🌟

Speech Pathology Week Day 5: Opportunity through Communication 💬

Communication is the key that opens doors to learning, to work, and to being part of the community. 🌏

Speech pathologists support people to develop the communication skills they need to participate fully in school, in the workplace, and in everyday life. Whether it’s helping a child build the foundations for learning, supporting a young person to find their voice in the classroom, or assisting an adult to return to work after illness or injury, speech pathologists create pathways to opportunity.

Because when communication barriers are removed, possibilities open up. 💛
