🥝 To eat the skin or not to eat the skin of kiwi fruit?

You might be surprised to here… Eat the skin!!

🥝 Yes you heard me, the skin of kiwi fruit is packed full of insoluble fibre, which is good for digestion and bowel function.

🥝 Sure you can scrub off the fuzzy bits and eat it like an apple or if your like me just cut it up and add it your smoothie.

Like always when you plan to eat the whole fruit, wash it thoroughly and buy organic whenever possible.

1 kiwi fruit
Handful of baby spinach
1/2 cup frozen pineapple
1 1/2cups coconut water

How do you get veggies into your breakfast?

🥕🥕Muffins of course! 🥕🥕

These little guys are packed full of carrot and zucchini making them a savoury style breakfast muffin.

Adding cheese and almond flour adds protein for blood sugar control and a dollop of grass fed organic butter on the side covers those healthy fats to keep you full and your brain going.

If you’re a smoothie lover, here is one of my winter favourites to enjoy!

✨oranges- for a hit of vitamin C
✨ginger and turmeric- to warm up your digestion
✨oats and banana for slow release carbohydrates
✨ collagen to keep you looking young and protein to keep you full

No greens in this one so add them to your next meal.

Love this combination to support immunity through the cooler months.

Who else cringes at the thought of salad in winter 🙋🏼‍♀️

As the weather cools off here in Melbourne it’s time to put away all of the raw salads, green smoothies and cold food and look to bring warmth within.

A few simple ways to do this without having a complete dietary overhaul is by tweaking ours meals:

✨Bring in warming herbs and spices like turmeric, cinnamon, chilli, garlic & ginger to dressings and sauces

✨Add roasted veg or veggie chips to leafy greens & budha bowls

✨Add fresh ginger or a pinch of cayenne to smoothies. No more adding ice!

✨Stew pear, apples and in season fruit to top your cereal/granola/ yogurt or add to smoothies.

✨add winter veg to the menu- roast cauliflower, baked potatoes etc

✨ enjoy soups, slow cooked meats, stews and casseroles.

💭 some raw is of course ok, but how can you warm your overall meal up! This buddha bowl is a perfect example of a traditionally cold meal with a touch of warmth: raw, blanched, roasted and spice!

There is a lot of confusion around oats and whether they are actually gluten free or not- well let’s make it clear:

✨NO they are not gluten free!✨

So bare with me while I explain:

What is gluten anyway? Gluten is used to describe a prolamin protein fraction that affects those with coeliac disease. This gluten fraction is called gliadin in wheat, hordein in barley, secalin in rye and it’s avenin in oats. And this is where there tends to be confusion with oats- which contains the protein avenin, a gluten protein.

So although you can buy gluten free oats which is labelled ‘gluten free’ it means they have been processed without being in contact with wheat, rye or barley. They are also required to contain no more than a predetermined level of gliadin (aka wheat gluten), however this level changes depending on the country, state, legislation etc and it is not often disclosed.

👉If you are coeliac you should avoid oats.
👉If you have a gluten intolerance or sensitivity you do need to buy ‘gluten free’ oats and be mindful you are still consuming small amounts of gluten protein (avenin).

If you are still unsure if oats are right for you, please ask and I can help work out what is right for you.
