💕Happy International Women’s Day (and endometriosis awareness month) and here’s to celebrating all the incredible women in the world today fighting for respect, proper healthcare and an equal opportunity.
💕 Medical misogyny runs deep but this study published in 2013 shows clearly why feminism has still NOT gone far enough.
💕Endometriosis is a condition in which cells similar to the lining of the uterus, or endometrium, grow outside the uterus which causes scarring and severe pain throughout the menstrual cycle.
💕It is widely considered one of the top 20 most painful medical conditions because it is a chronic disease that causes pelvic pain, pain with s*x, a swollen and distended belly, heavy menstruation and in some cases causes women to pass out or need hospitalisation.
💕This ridiculous study in 2012 somehow received ethics approval and was publicly funded by the University of Milan school of medicine and has become famous for its dubious ethics and lack of scientific relevance. Here’s some examples of why it was insane;
1. The women taking in part in the study had not given their consent to be judged for their attractiveness and didn’t know this was a part of the consultation.
2. The authors asked the women about their s*xual history (to show that women with endometriosis had s*xual in*******se earlier than men, not to help support their pain and trauma).
3. Only “Caucasian” women were selected for inclusion in the study
4. The researchers measured their body mass index, waist-to-hip ratio and breast-to-underbreast ratio.
5. They concluded that based on the evidence they had, endometriosis sufferers WERE more attractive which I’m sure the women suffering debilitating pain were happy to hear?
💕Luckily in 2020, the study was declared an ethical violation against women and has been removed from medical journals.
💕As much as I love the speaking events and gatherings of all the incredible women who are doing magical things, we need to keep pushing for more women’s health research and funding to truly help all women thrive and take on the world pain free!
