From 1 December 2025, Queensland became the first Australian state to allow all GPs to diagnose and prescribe ADHD medication for adults without additional training. While this reform improves access to care, it's important to understand what it covers, where the boundaries sit, and how it may shape clinical decision-making and patient expectations. Metacognition – our ability to reflect on our own thinking – can help healthcare practitioners recognise and reduce cognitive biases that may contribute to diagnostic errors, a common factor in medico-legal claims.

Dr Pamela J. Ferrada, MTeach, PhD, our Member Education, Knowledge, and Research Manager, will be presenting at the Monash Medical School Improving Diagnosis Symposium on Monday, 15 December 2025. She will share how metacognitive practices can support more accurate and reflective diagnostic decision-making.

Pamela will deliver two rapid-fire presentations during the afternoon session:
• 2:50pm – Learning to Diagnose: Leveraging cognitive load theory (CLT) and metacognition to reduce diagnostic errors
• 3:10pm – Diagnostic Errors: Understanding healthcare practitioners’ medico-legal liability

The symposium, themed "The Art and Science of Diagnosis", brings together experts to explore innovations, research, and education in diagnostic quality and safety. It’s a great opportunity for clinicians and healthcare professionals to network, share knowledge, and enhance diagnostic excellence for patients.

We’re proud to see Pamela sharing her expertise on reducing diagnostic errors and supporting safer healthcare practices.

Session 1 Complete!

MIPS members just gained powerful insights on leadership presence and purposeful communication with Dr Brett Factor.

Key insight:
You’re not only responding to the situation itself – you’re responding to what the situation brings up in you.

What participants learned:
• How to recognise your own pressure responses across four domains (behavioural, cognitive, internal narrative and physiological), and why these matter for clinical leadership.
• Practical tools to reset and re-centre under load – including deliberate pacing, vocal presence, pausing and focus reset tools.

Missed it? Members can now watch the recording anytime in MyMIPS: https://qr.mips.com.au/clp1-ondemandFB

More sessions coming: Future workshops on managing challenging situations and building influence will be announced separately. Your leadership journey continues ↓
