Schools shouldn’t limit Special Provisions based on what they think VCAA will approve.

Under the Disability Standards for Education, adjustments must be based on a student’s functional needs, supported by expert reports and a history of use in school assessments — not predictions.

The VCAA then reviews what the school has already put in place.
If your child’s recommended supports aren’t being implemented or have been reduced, you’re not alone — and you have rights.

Many people are hurting right now.

Amid the sadness and shock, one truth remains: our strength comes from caring for each other across every denomination, every belief, every background.

Myth or Fact? "Persistent speech sound errors can affect later reading and spelling."📝 📚

FACT!✅
Persistent speech errors (like “fink”, “wabbit”, “poon”) suggest that some speech sound skills are still developing, which can make it harder to build the sound-awareness needed for reading and spelling.

These underlying weaknesses are strong, early predictors of:
* phonemic awareness
* decoding
* spelling accuracy
* reading fluency

Early, targeted intervention improves both speech clarity and the literacy skills children need for school success.

Myth or Fact?“Children will grow out of reading difficulties.”📖 🤔

Myth! ❌
Decades of longitudinal research shows that untreated reading difficulties do NOT! resolve with age. Children who struggle in the early years almost always continue to struggle without structured, explicit intervention (e.g, Science of Reading!). Early support changes trajectories; waiting does not.

Evidence 📑:
• The “Matthew Effect” in reading describes how early gaps widen over time when not addressed.
• Longitudinal studies show that reading difficulties in Prep–Year 2 are highly stable into adolescence if children don’t receive evidence-based intervention.
• Systematic, explicit instruction based on the 5 keys to Reading produces the strongest improvements for students with reading disorders.

✨ New research on autistic masking in teens ✨
A 2025 study found that many autistic adolescents mask so effectively at school that almost half go unnoticed by their teachers. Masking is often a survival strategy, but it can come at a huge cost to mental health, identity, and learning.
In our work, and in our own lived experiences, we see this every day. Many autistic teens put enormous effort into “passing,” often leaving them exhausted by the end of the school day. Recognising and supporting high-masking students is essential to help them feel safe and thrive as their authentic selves.
💡 Three ways we can help reduce the need to mask:
1️⃣ Create spaces where stimming, rest, and downtime are safe and respected.
2️⃣ Actively celebrate special interests and strengths as part of learning.
3️⃣ Use affirming language that validates autistic identity and removes pressure to “fit in.”
📖 Read the research: Autistic teens mask their social differences in display of 'passing as non-autistic'

Families often ask: “When should we request an Individual Education Plan (IEP)?”
IEPs are not just about academics, they’re about a child’s whole education. That includes learning, social-emotional development, sensory preferences, communication, independence, and wellbeing.
You can request an IEP when:
– Your child has a diagnosed disability, developmental difference, or learning difficulty.
– Teachers are providing informal adjustments but nothing is documented.
– Your child is working well below or above expected level, and the curriculum needs adapting.
– They need support with social communication and/or friendships
– Sensory differences affect how they participate in class (e.g., noise, movement, transitions).
– They’re receiving allied health or NDIS support that should link with school goals.
– A transition point is coming up (new teacher, new year, starting secondary).
An IEP sets out agreed goals, adjustments, and supports, with input from families and, importantly, the student themselves. It’s about making sure every child can access and participate meaningfully in their education.
If it's not written down, supports can be hard to track through the years. This becomes especially important in the secondary years when applying for examination arrangements.
