Thanks to everyone who joined us for the Advance Care Planning - Everything you need to know program we ran this morning. We learnt all about Advance Care Planning and had the opportunity to engage in rich conversation with our local community on this important issue.

Thanks to Nillumbik Shire Council and Northern Health for their collaboration! Together we make a dream team.

Ella (from Northern Health) is a legend and makes digesting Advance Care Planning easy. And we love the super organised team Shire Council.

We look forward to being a part of an event like this again.

This week is National Advance Care Planning Week.

Advance Care Planning is something we are passionate about at Banksia.

Why? Because an Advance Care Planning helps us understand the people we are caring for. When we know what is important to our clients and their carers we can focus on providing care that respectfully aligns to their wishes.

Advance Care Planning is the process of planning for future health and personal care, so that individuals can document their values, beliefs, and preferences for care if they lose the capacity to make decisions.

The plan can be formally documented in an Advance Care directive https://www.health.vic.gov.au/advance-care-planning/forms -care-directive, but it can also just begin with conversations about what’s important to you.

Meet James (pictured with Banksia’s CEO Michelle).

In January 2025, James approached Banksia with a heartfelt offer - to donate a syringe driver worth $4,000 in memory of his beloved wife, Eva.

James and Eva met in London in 1968, travelled the world together in an old post office van, and eventually made Melbourne home. They were inseparable until Eva’s passing in November 2024.

James had noticed that the syringe driver used to assist Eva had been donated, and this inspired him to give back to the service that had supported them. Since then, James’ extraordinary generosity has funded three syringe drivers, a wheelchair, pressure care cushions, and professional training for our staff.

“I live with the pain of the loss of Eva every day… When you love someone as much as I loved Eva, you want to keep them alive in your thoughts, your words, and your actions.”

Thank you James. Your generosity demonstrates the powerful impact community support can have.

A quick whip around the building at 1.30pm on a Thursday does not yield a lot of staff to pose for a picture, when most are on the road. But the small sample of women in this picture presents the diversity of skills that make up the work that Banksia offers our communities.

Here we have an Administrator, a Clinical Educator, a Nurse, a Physio, a Volunteer Coordinator, an Engagement Coordinator, a Social Worker, a Human Resources expert, and a CEO.

Today is International Women’s Day, and on this day we acknowledge the incredible contributions, achievements, and resilience of women everywhere — including the remarkable women within our own team.

This year’s theme – Give to Gain - reminds us that progress is built on equality, respect, and opportunity for all.

To our wonderful team — thank you for your contributions and for the work that you do with and for our palliative clients and their loved ones. We know that the impact you have on clients, families, and our community is immeasurable.
We encourage everyone to continue to champion inclusivity, challenge bias, and support one another — not just today, but every day.

Happy International Women’s Day!
