Frustrated that your BGL behaves early in a session… until it doesn’t?

It’s a pain in the a**. I get it.
And it’s incredibly common in the people I work with.

However once you understand why, it actually makes sense.

Your muscles run on glycogen (carbs) first.
As those stores start dropping — especially with increased insulin sensitivity — your BGL can follow.

That doesn’t mean you’re unfit.
It doesn’t mean you planned badly.
It means you’re training with type 1.

Training with T1D isn’t just discipline and carbs.
It’s understanding how your body works.

Understand the why.
Then structure the how.

*of course BGL will also vary based on factors such as IOB, whether you have eaten, temperature, etc.

I have all my clients do this, T1D or not.

Using RPE and RIR is a tried and tested method to keep your training on track and manage the fluctuations life throws your way - and I don’t have to tell a group of T1Ds about that!

We do want to look at numbers such as weight lifted, distance run etc over time as a metric for overall programming - but don’t get too caught up on that in the day-to-day.

Another way you can make sure the T1D curve balls don’t chip away at your motivation.

Trust the process. It will work.

Exercise is so much more than BGLs, the weight on the scale, and the reflection in the mirror.

One of the biggest motivational barriers I see to people living with type one Diabetes consistently exercising is the feeling that a mid-workout snack ruins the good work you’ve put in at the gym.

Firstly, the calories we burn in a gym session only make up about 5% of the total calories we burn in a day. So if you have a fat loss goal it’s not the snack that will derail you.

Secondly exercise is about so much more than blood glucose levels and weight loss. Focusing on these takes away from all the other amazing benefits of regular physical activity.

NEW BLOG: T1D and Eating Disorders - why we need to talk about the overlap.

Recently you were introduced to - T1D, advocate, public health expert and all-round good human.

She has penned a piece on T1D and EDs, and why we need to talk about it.

Whether to the point of diagnosis or not, most (if not all) T1Ds will have a disordered relationship with food at some point.

Unsurprisingly, it some with a trigger warning.

Exercise and pump settings on the T:Slim.

As always, this post is educational in nature and any changes to your diabetes management should be discussed with your team.

This is also not intended to promote the T:Slim pump - rather reflect my own experience and tips for ease of use.

Most health advice assumes you live in a perfect world.
Stable routine. Plenty of time. Predictable energy. Minimal stress.

That’s not reality for most people.
And when you live with Type 1 Diabetes, the gap gets even wider.

No matter how much that meathead PT swears by it, we simply don’t all have the same 24 hours in a day. Your health isn’t just shaped by motivation or willpower.
It’s shaped by where you live, how you work, who supports you, how tired you are, and how unpredictable your body can be on any given day.

This is exactly why so many “New Year, New Me” plans fall apart: not because people don’t care, but because the system wasn’t built for their life.

These challenges and goals are barely built for those without T1D, let alone with it!

Pricks in Motion was built in response to this.

A 6-week program designed around real life, real constraints, and the realities of T1D — not ideal conditions or perfection.

No crash plans. No pressure to exercise 5x per week. No magic elixirs.
Just systems that fit and education that empowers.

See you there!

Most New Year health plans fail by early February — and living with Type 1 Diabetes make it that little bit harder.

After more than a decade working in health and wellbeing (and living with type 1 diabetes myself), I’ve seen this pattern play out again and again. It’s not a lack of motivation. It’s that most plans aren’t designed to adapt when life, stress, and blood sugars get in the way.

Pricks in Motion is a 6-week health program for people living with type 1 diabetes, designed to help you build habits that last beyond the early-year motivation and support your health long-term.

This isn’t about perfection or doing more.
It’s about setting the year up well — and not bailing on yourself when things aren’t perfect.

Presale opens 15 Jan.
Program begins 2 Feb.

If you’ve got questions, send me a DM — always happy to chat.

I’m so excited to connect with you all!
