PSA: Thank you Animalia - for pet owners and wildlife rescuers. Ticks are in our area
🚨 BUSH TICKS ARE IN FRANKSTON 🚨
We recently had a young brushtail possum come into care with this bush tick attached, something we’re starting to see more of as these parasites make their way further into Victoria.
While bush ticks don’t cause paralysis, they can still pose a serious risk by spreading disease and causing irritation, infection, and blood loss/ anaemia. Especially in small or already vulnerable wildlife and pets.
For animals like possums, even a single tick can lead to complications if left untreated.
⚠️ What to look out for:
Unusual lethargy or weakness
Excessive scratching or irritation
Visible ticks (often around the face, ears, and neck)
Animals not behaving normally
Check your pets regularly, especially around the head, neck, paws, armpits and ears
Keep up to date with parasite preventatives.
Keep an eye out for wildlife that seems unwell or struggling
If you find a sick, injured, or tick-affected wildlife, contact a wildlife rescue immediately!
These ticks are becoming more common in our area, and awareness is key to protecting both wildlife and our pets. 🩷
