CIMA - Crisis Intervention & Management Australasia

CIMA - Crisis Intervention & Management Australasia Preventing, Mitigating and Managing Critical Incident Stress & Trauma.

CIMA specialise in training, consultancy and assistance for first responders, agencies and organisations in crisis intervention, traumatic exposure and disaster response. Crisis Intervention and Management Australasia (CIMA) is a not-for profit foundation dedicated to the prevention, mitigation and effective management of critical incident stress and trauma for personnel in emergency services, police, corrections, health, welfare and related services. It provides training and support for workers in these agencies in managing the impact of disabling psychological stress and trauma in their work. In addition it supplies advocacy and consultancy services to small enterprises seeking help with local workplace incidents by providing a conduit between these groups and qualified personnel. Its origins go back to the mid 1980’s when contact was established with the American based International Critical Incident Stress Foundation (ICISF). Agreement was later reached to adopt much of their training material which is being used by a wide range of major organisations including the United Nations, World Vision International, the US National Fire authority and major international airlines. Formerly known as the Critical Incident Stress Management Foundation of Australia (CISMFA), its name was recently changed to reflect the broader educational focus which has taken place over the past two years. CIMA is registered in Victoria as a not-for-profit charity and is registered with the Australian Taxation Office as a Deductible Gift Recipient.

Kia ora and warm greetings to all CIMA members on both sides of the Tasman.
We are looking forward to connecting at our AGM this month and to progress our planning for the year ahead as a wider peer network.

To all who work in the first responders community in Australia and Aotearoa and to those who have been providing support as part of the multitude of disaster recovery events over this last year we warmly thank you.

A balance between work and family occurs when a person can sufficiently meet family commitments and adequately perform responsibilities at work.

However, the role of a frontline worker is a specialised area of work that involves shift work, and as a result can interfere with the body clock, sleep, social life, and of course, family. It can also result in acute effects on mood and performance, which may lead to long-term problems in mental health.

Here are 3 reminders to self care as a shift worker

1. Protect your wellbeing, where you can, establish wellbeing practises around rosters.

2. Ensure you have strong communications lines with your management team should you feel your work is
having an impact on your family work life balance and your mental health.

3. Prioritise opportunities and events to connect with your family and loved ones.

To our members, colleagues and co-workers and those in the service sectors of health, emergency and response. Thank you for your dedicated spirit in pursuing care for others.
