Obesity is an illness, not a choice

Obesity is a complex medical condition influenced by genetics, hormones, environment, mental health, and metabolism.

It is not about “lack of willpower” or “trying harder”.

That’s why effective treatment starts with medical assessment, personalised care, and long-term support, not judgement.

Not feeling 100% confident yet?

Uncertainty is common when you’re considering treatment options, lifestyle changes, or medical support.

That’s why our consultations focus on education, understanding, and personalised assessment, so you can make decisions that feel right for you.

Surgery or medication. What’s the difference?

Both can be used in weight management, but they work in different ways and suit different people.

Weight-loss medications can support weight loss while treatment continues, and ongoing care is often needed to help maintain results.

Bariatric surgery has the strongest long-term evidence for larger and more durable weight loss, particularly for people with more severe obesity and obesity-related health conditions.

At Perth Weight Loss Surgery, treatment pathways are based on your medical history, current health, and individual clinical assessment.

Berry & Chia Yoghurt Parfait 🫐🥣

A simple, balanced breakfast that’s quick to prepare and easy on the stomach. This parfait uses plain ingredients to support protein, fullness, and steady energy without the added sugars often found in café versions.

Ingredients
• ¾ cup plain yoghurt (or Greek yoghurt for extra protein)
• 1 tablespoon chia seeds
• ¾ cup berries, fresh or frozen
• 1 teaspoon honey
• ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

- In a bowl, mix yoghurt, chia seeds, honey and vanilla until well combined
- Add berries to the bottom of a jar or container and gently crush with a fork
- Top with the yoghurt mixture

Refrigerate for at least 10 minutes or overnight to allow chia seeds to soften

Enjoy straight from the fridge as a quick grab-and-go breakfast 💛

Is weight loss surgery the end of the journey?

Ongoing support matters because it helps patients:
• adjust as their body changes after surgery
• know what to do when progress slows
• manage nutrition, movement, and mindset safely
• feel supported, not left to figure it out alone

At Perth Weight Loss & Surgery, care continues beyond surgery.

Summer reminder 🌞

Research has shown that hot weather can naturally reduce appetite and affect energy levels. When temperatures rise, the body works harder to regulate heat, and eating itself produces additional heat. As a result, it’s common for people to feel less hungry, eat differently, or feel more fatigued during summer - especially during very warm days.

These changes are normal physiological responses to heat, not a sign that something is wrong or that health routines are failing. In hotter weather, listening to your body and adjusting expectations can be an important part of looking after your overall wellbeing.

The start of a new year often brings a desire to reset, but meaningful change doesn’t require perfection or drastic action. For many people, progress looks like learning, adjusting, and continuing forward at a pace that feels manageable.

Focusing on realistic goals and a compassionate approach can help reduce pressure and support consistency over time. Small steps, taken steadily, can play an important role in building habits that feel sustainable and aligned with long-term wellbeing.

Every journey is individual, and change rarely follows a straight line. What matters most is creating an approach that feels supportive, balanced, and achievable.

Health journeys are rarely linear. Focusing on self-compassion rather than perfection can help reduce unnecessary pressure and support consistency over time. When individuals allow room for learning and adjustment, long-term lifestyle changes can often feel more manageable and sustainable.

Holidays are a time to slow down, switch off, and enjoy yourself, and that’s important. But they don’t have to mean stopping all movement altogether.

Even while on holidays, Dr Siva Gounder makes time to stay active in simple, achievable ways. Not through strict routines or intense sessions, but by keeping movement part of everyday life, even when the setting changes.

It’s a reminder that staying active doesn’t need to be complicated. A short walk, a light run, or simply moving your body a little more than usual can help support overall wellbeing, without taking away from rest or enjoyment.

As the year begins, this approach reinforces balance. Relax when you can, enjoy the moment, and remember that small amounts of movement can still play a role in maintaining healthy habits over time.

Obesity is no longer just a “lifestyle issue.” The WHO has officially declared it a chronic, relapsing disease, and for the first time issued guidelines recognising treatments like GLP-1 medications (e.g. Ozempic) as part of long-term care, when paired with healthy diet, activity and medical supervision.

That change matters. It shows the world is beginning to see obesity for what it is: a medical condition that deserves ongoing support, not judgement.
At Perth Weight Loss & Surgery, that’s exactly how we treat it, with respect, understanding, and tailored plans based on your health and goals.
