What are the 4 cardinal signs of acute inflammation?

1. Redness

-These are both due to dilation of local arterioles, causing hyperaemia (increased blood flow) which brins more cells and chemicals of the immune system to the injured area.

Hypersensitivities:
When the immune system damages tissue as it fights off a perceived threat, such as pollen or animal fur, that would otherwise be harmless to the body.

Immediate hypersensitivities, also known as allergic reactions, occur with in seconds of contact of the allergen and last about 30 minutes. Can be local or systemic.

Subacute hypersensitivities onset around 1-3 hours after contact with allergen and last 10-15 hours (eg. mismatched blood transfusion).

Delayed hypersensitivities appear 1-3 days after allergen contact (eg. allergic contact dermatitis)

When T cells attack the bodies own cells

Rheumatoid Arthritis: Systematically destroys joints

Myasthenia Gravis: Impairs communication between nerves and skeletal muscle

Multiple Sclerosis: Destroys the myelin of the white matter of the brain and spinal cord

T1DM: Destroys pancreatic beta cells, resulting in a deficit of insulin and inability to use carbohydrates

Glomerulonephritis: Damages the kidney’s filtration membrane and impairs renal function.

-Physical barriers: Skin/epidermis

-Mucous Membranes: Nasal/Oral Cavities, Bronchi

-Hair & Cilia: Trachea and Bronchi

-Acid: Skin, vaginal and stomach secretions

-Enzymes:Lysozyme, found in saliva, respiratory mucus and lacrimal fluid(tears) of the eye destroys bacteria.

What are they?
-action of skeletal muscles
-pressure changes in the thorax during breathing
-Valves to prevent backflow
