Coeliac Awareness Week is from the 13-20 March.

Coeliac Disease is an immune-based condition where the ingestion of gluten—a protein found in wheat, barley, rye and oats—triggers an immune response that damages the small intestine and causes inflammation in other areas of the body. This inflammation can lead to a range of symptoms, and if left untreated, serious long-term health problems can result.

That's why early detection is important with the first step to diagnosis beign through a blood pathology test (Coeliac Serology).

Find out more about Coeliac Disease by visiting https://coeliac.org.au/

Genetic variations make each of us unique, and they can also influence the way our bodies respond to certain medications. For example, some genetic variations change a person’s response to a medication, so they may need to be prescribed a higher or lower dose than usual, or may need to use a different medication.

The study of how genetic variations affect our response to medication is called pharmacogenomics (PGx).

1 in 3 people have a variation in their CYP2C19 that accelerates drug metabolism.*
1 in 6 people have a variation in CYP2D6 that slows drug metabolism.*

Some private health funds now offer partial rebates for pharmacogenomics testing – check your policy/speak with your provider to find out more.

For more details about this testing and the genes/medications covered by the PGx Panel – please visit: https://www.sonicgenetics.com.au/patient/test-information/pharmacogenomics/ or chat to our Genetics Solutions Manager - Henry.
