🧠 Repetitive vs Functional Language what’s the difference?

You might hear a child say things like “C is for cat” or “A is for apple.” While this shows what they’ve learned, it’s known as repetitive language and it doesn’t always help them express their needs or connect with others

Functional language, on the other hand, includes everyday phrases like “Can I have more please?” or “Hi, my name is…” that support communication in daily life

💬 At DSKC, our Speech Pathologists support children to use language that helps them connect in everyday moments

✨ Learning never stops at DSKC! ✨

Recently, our Occupational Therapist Elizabeth attended “Supporting Young ADHDers: A Webinar for Clinicians” a professional learning session focused on evidence-based strategies to support children with ADHD across therapy, home and school settings

At De Silva Kids Clinic, we’re intentional about creating space for our team to grow whether that’s through external PD opportunities, ELEVATE Days or in-house learning sessions

We truly believe that when our clinicians continue to learn, we deliver the highest quality of care for the families we support 💙

Want to build a stronger and more trusting relationship with your child? 💛

Validating their feelings can be the simple switch that opens up genuine communication and strengthens your connection

Try this next time:
👉 “I can see you’re feeling frustrated this is really frustrating”
👉 “It’s annoying we have to go to bed early and I can see this is something you don’t want to do”

When you reflect your child’s feelings back to them, you’re saying: I see you. I understand you. I’m here with you.

That simple moment of validation helps them feel heard and opens the door to calmer, more honest communication. 🗣️

Recently Elizabeth, one of our Occupational Therapists, attended Occupational Therapy Australia’s Sensory Modulation: Sensory Diet workshop with Dr. Tina Champagne. The session explored how sensory modulation strategies can support participation, self-regulation and engagement across daily activities 🧠

At DSKC, we value giving our clinicians the space to learn, grow and bring new evidence-based perspectives back into our multidisciplinary team. That’s why we offer a generous PD budget, giving our therapists the opportunity to attend external courses of their choice to learn, grow and continue expanding their knowledge in areas they’re passionate about

In 2009, our Practice Director & Principal Speech Pathologist, Trudy met Julia

Through those early interactions, Julia was inspired to pursue a career in speech pathology and is now working as a Speech Pathology Assistant

Julia recently came to DSKC for a behind-the-scenes look at life inside a multidisciplinary clinic observing day-to-day operations, connecting with the team and catching up with Trudy.
