It was another exciting day at Boneham for yesterday's Melbourne Cup.

The fashions on the field were a highlight with the posh frocks and fascinators mingling with the dapper cap's and a top hat or two.

Exciting outcomes in our own newspaper races with staff and residents mightily competing and a wonderful meal from our superb kitchen team to help us watch the race.

Well done to our lifestyle team for organising the day and for all of our residents who partook in a day of equine mania!

We are already looking forward to next years Cup!

Today we said a big thank you to our wonderful and dedicated Boneham Volunteers with a training session followed by a celebration lunch. Our resident Jann helped to give out the gifts to our volunteers.

Dear residents and representatives

As we start to see the sunshine emerge from what has felt like and incredibly long winter, we are pleased to note that we currently remain COVID free at Boneham. We are preparing for our usual influx of COVID cases however over the Christmas/New Year period which is fast approaching. Please remember to avoid visiting if you have any cold or flu symptoms to keep COVID at bay for as long as we can whilst we continue to build our stocks of PPE and Rapid Antigen Tests over coming weeks.

We have come down a little from our recent high spirits over our successful grant application to contribute $9.5 million of the $11.5 million dollar cost towards the construction of a dementia specific extension to our current premises. Our Board is currently reviewing the requirements of the grant offer and completing due diligence prior to negotiating a final commitment with the Commonwealth. In the interim Boneham is seeking out additional grant support to assist with staging of works and updating our financial models and strategic plans to incorporate the new addition. Exciting times ahead indeed.

Meanwhile we continue with business as usual with lots of bus trips for an ice cream by the beach in such lovely spring weather. We remain incredibly appreciative of our community and sponsors support which paid for our new bus and can testify that it is getting a lot of usage by our grateful residents. Remember to give us a wave when you see us on the bus around town.

In other lovely news one of our fabulous cleaning staff, Roxanne Motley, has been awarded with the SA Cleaner of the Year Award by Diversey. Well done Roxy in winning this highly competitive award, you are a star!

Next week we will also be celebrating our volunteers who provide countless hours of unpaid support to our residents and staff. We are highly appreciative of all that they do, they are the unheralded heroes of aged care who give without everyday reward.

Thank you all for you ongoing support of our service and we hope you enjoy some of the sunshine that we have all been waiting for.

Regards

Michael Filsell

Dear residents and representatives

I have arrived back from leave in recent days to the wonderful news that Boneham has been successful in obtaining a grant of almost $9.5 million dollars under the Commonwealth Aged Care Capital Assistance Program for the construction of an additional 16 bed memory support unit.

This grant application was the culmination of many months of hard work and planning by our Board, staff and with the support of excellent consulting services by Harvest Consulting under the auspices of the Commonwealths Service Development Assistance Program.

Boneham will also contribute $2 million to this project making the total investment $11.5 million dollars.

We will construct 2 x 8 bed residential units based on a home like model. Each unit will have its own lounge. kitchenette and dining room. The two units will each have their own entrance and be connected to each other through a shared staffing space and nursing office. A shared commercial kitchen/servery will service both units and there will be a laundry so that residents can wash their own clothes if they choose to.

Each unit will have its own sensory garden to engage residents in the outdoors through sight, smell and touch,

The new wing will have its own entry off Williams Road and also have some office, meeting and storage spaces. The wing will have an internal connection to the main Boneham building through a connecting corridor from the Ibis Wing.

Works are predicted to commence in mid to late 2026 with the new wing opening around late 2028 or early 2029.

We are thrilled that we will be able to bring such a highly contemporary dementia care facility to our community. This is only possible through the support of our wonderful staff, residents and families and community businesses and organisations.

Thank you to everyone involved in the development and funding of this project and we look forward to keeping you informed over coming months on our progress.

Kind Regards

Michael Filsell
