3 Neurological Steps to help kids combat frustration, overwhelm and anger.

Step 1️⃣: Encourage Creative Time
Puzzles, legos, colouring, fort building, reading and imagination activities all activate different parts of the brain 🧠 than stress centres. They also allow the parasympathetic nervous system (the bodies natural rest and relax response) to self calm and soothe 😌 after or to prevent a meltdown when an overwhelming situation is present.

Step :2️⃣ Let them make noise and let it out! Dance Party Time! 💃🏻
Research shows that vocal humming, singing 🎤 or even yelling (at the right time 😉) activates the Vagus nerve and helps calm the body and brain! So letting the kids take that break outside or in the basement really helps not only get energy out but activates the Vagus Nerve, the key branch of the parasympathetic (rest and relax system).

Step 3️⃣: Stimulate the Vagus Nerve! You can do this through direct input - the easiest and most effective way to help get that “brake pedal” side of the nervous to get stronger 💪🏼 (especially if no at-home activities are working) is through a Chiropractic Adjustment!

B R A I N D E V E L O P M E N T
A child’s brain does its most amount of growth within the first few years of life. Initial brain connections are formed as a result of everyday experiences that a child received in their early years. These provide the foundations for further brain development in later life.

In the first 9 months, a baby's brain is forming connections between what they see, hear, taste and feel
From 9 months to 12 months, a baby will become increasingly vocal, as their understanding of emotions develops
By the age of 3, a child has around 1,000 trillion brain connections, the most they will ever have in their life, as these are 'pruned' in later development.

So what can help to maximise a child’s development? The answer is MOVEMENT. Movement is the foundational element of brain development. During early childhood, movements have been found to have a significant impact on your child’s long-term memory, perception, and development. Motor milestone development is important to develop a higher learning centre.

Skipping milestones, such as crawling or rolling - could affect the child’s balance or impact other higher learning areas such as memory, behaviour or social skills.

So keep your babies moving!

Are you worried about your family's posture?
DM us a photo of your child’s posture, from the front and side (like the picture), and we will send you a report and recommendations from our chiropractor Dr Adam - for FREE!
Why are we doing this?
Forward head posture is set to become a serious problem, with school’s these days starting screen use quite young. If a child is on a computer at school 5 days a week for 13 years of schooling (not to mention the additional study at home and recreational screen time), by the time they get out into the ‘real world’ they may be set up for spinal issues later in life (if they aren’t already suffering).
A Family Wellness check is imperative in making a change to this cycle so that we set the next generation up for success – spinal health is an integral part of that.

P O S T U R E
Despite the countless internal issues that come with poor posture, the physical factors are what most people notice first. It often looks like: rounded shoulders, granny hump, lopsided walking, uneven hips, uneven shoulder heights. Impaired posture can often lead to underlying symptoms including neck and back pain, stiffness, poor circulation, fatigue. Even more seriously, poor posture can lead to dysfunction and degeneration of your spine and nervous system.

For all the desk workers out there - you’ve got to be even more careful. Sitting posture can significantly influence the head/neck posture and the activity of the muscles of the upper back and neck.Prolonged and static sitting, over time, can lead to severe upper quadrant musculoskeletal pain

So how do we correct it?
Work on strengthening the muscles in your upper back and your chest. This will help to encourage the ‘shoulders up and back’ motion.
Do daily postural exercises (ask your chiro for these)
Actively try to stand up tall and straight whenever you can
Get checked by your chiropractor!

F O R W A R D H E A D P O S T U R E
With more than a third of our day dedicated to screens and technology, it is no surprise that we are seeing more cases of ‘tech neck’ coming out of the works everyday. Tech neck, also known as Forward Head Posture (FHP), is where your head physically sits too far forward causing repetitive strain on your muscles and ligaments in your neck. FHP is mostly caused from a lack of postural discipline and overtime can lead to neck pain, shoulder pain, stiffness and tight muscles. These are the symptoms we notice but there are ones we don’t…
brain development
postural issues
sleep interference

When we talk about forward head posture, we often dive into how it structurally impacts our spine and nervous system. When our neck is out of its correct alignment by up to 60 degrees, that puts up to 27kgs of pressure on the neck and spine.

The early signs of FHP can be:
Difficulty concentrating
Irritability and social alienation
Neck, upper back and shoulder pain
Rounded shoulders and a forward head posture
Tightness and reduced mobility in the neck, upper back and shoulders
Headaches & migraines
Increased pain when looking down
Eye strain

If you are ticking multiple boxes of the early signs, consider getting checked by your chiropractor!

Are you using your tech wisely?
In our previous posts we have talked about how excessive our screen time is. Although it’s hard to avoid it in this technological world we live in, here are some tips to help you use it wisely.

Avoid excessive use. Don’t let the endless scrolling swallow you for hours on end.
Take frequent breaks away from the screen.
Avoid being static for prolonged periods. Get up and get moving. Take a walk or do some stretching.
Position the device at eye level - so it reduces strain on the head/upper neck.
Avoid highly repetitive movements - typing, swiping for too long.
Avoid holding heavy or large devices for too long.

Did you know that the average Australian spends more than 9 hours of their day in front of a screen? Over the span of 1 year, that averages out to 143 days in front of a screen.

What is even more astounding, is the statistics for our children under the age of 8.
98% of children have some type of mobile device and a TV in their home

42% have their own tablet device

70% have watched videos on YouTube and played video games on a mobile device

59% have watched TV shows or movies on a mobile device

Only 28% have read a book on a mobile device

The average age for a child getting their first smartphone is 10.3 years

Over the coming posts we are going to dive into what the negative impacts of excess screen time can lead to - specifically ‘Forward Head Posture’ and ways to minimise the effects. Stay Tuned!
