Albany Day Hospital opened in 2019 and was built to meet the needs of patients in the Great Southern

The hospital is equipped with modern facilities, and the latest medical technology to deliver a comprehensive range of specialties including ophthalmology, general surgery, endoscopy procedures, fertility services, urology, hand surgery, oral and maxillofacial, and plastic surgery. Albany Day Hospital is proud to deliver the highest standard in clinical and nursing care to patients, families and clinicians through respect, integrity, innovation and compassion.

We’re thrilled to share that earlier this month, Albany Day Hospital performed our first-ever Arteriovenous (AV) Fistula surgery!

Thanks to the skill of Dr Mahmoud Al-Najjar (Vascular Surgeon), Dr Phil Marmion (Anaesthetist), and our amazing peri-operative team, patients in Albany can now access this life-changing dialysis surgery right here at home, without the long trip to the city.

This surgery creates a safe, long-term lifeline for dialysis patients, with care from our experienced nurses and a short stay post-procedure.

We’re proud to keep growing our services and providing more specialist care for the people of Albany. 💙

Big Night at Albany Day Hospital! 🌟

We recently welcomed GPs and emergency doctors from across the Great Southern for a fun and informative Vascular Education Evening and to launch our brand-new Varicose Vein Treatment Service! 🎉🩺

Dr Mahmoud Al-Najjar led the night with insights on early detection and the minimally invasive treatments now available right here in Albany. One of the biggest wins? Local patients can now avoid long trips to Perth for care faster, easier, and closer to home. 🙌

After some great case studies and a lively Q&A, the night wrapped up with plenty of connection and conversation.

New Vascular Service at Albany Day Hospital – Welcome Dr Mahmoud Al-Najjar!

Albany Day Hospital is delighted to welcome Dr Mahmoud Al-Najjar, a highly experienced Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon with more than 18 years of surgical expertise in Australia and abroad. Originally from Ottawa, Canada, Dr Al-Najjar has trained alongside some of Australia’s most respected vascular pioneers — Professor Paul Norman (Perth), the late Professor Philip Walker (Brisbane), and the late Associate Professor Michael Denton (Melbourne).

In Albany, Dr Al-Najjar now offers patients access to advanced, minimally invasive treatment for varicose veins, including radiofrequency ablation, VenaSeal (glue abolition), and ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy (UGFS) — meaning local patients no longer need to travel to Perth for modern vein care.

Beyond Albany, Dr Al-Najjar also provides specialist care for complex vascular conditions across WA, including aneurysm surgery, angioplasty and stenting, aortic and endovascular procedures, renal access for dialysis, and carotid artery surgery/stenting.

He continues to offer services in Geraldton, Bunbury, Perth, and Mandurah, ensuring regional communities have access to high-quality vascular care closer to home.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month 💗

This October, we pause to honour the strength, courage, and resilience of everyone impacted by breast cancer.

We recognise the ongoing efforts of healthcare professionals, researchers, and support networks who are making a difference every day in the fight against this disease.

This month is a time to raise awareness, encourage early detection, and stand together in support of those newly diagnosed, those undergoing treatment, and the families and loved ones who walk alongside them.

We’re delighted to welcome Penelope Marshall to the Nexus Hospitals Executive Team as our new Chief Nurse Officer and Director of Clinical Governance.

Penelope brings more than 22 years of experience in nursing and midwifery leadership, including over eight years in senior executive roles at Ramsay Health Care and across three private hospitals. She most recently held the position of National Director, Nursing Governance at Healthscope Operations.

Her career spans both acute and aged care sectors, with a proven track record in clinical governance, patient safety, quality improvement, and operational leadership. Penelope also served as Executive General Manager, Clinical Governance, Risk and Innovation for Victoria’s largest aged care provider.

She holds two master’s degrees in Health Care Leadership and Management and Health and Medical Law and is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. In addition to her executive experience, Penelope is the Victorian Practitioner Member on the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (AHPRA), playing a vital role in shaping the future of nursing nationally.

Penelope is passionate about leading high-performing teams, mentoring future clinical leaders, and ensuring safe, person-centred care across the healthcare system.
