Big Night at Albany Day Hospital! 🌟

We recently welcomed GPs and emergency doctors from across the Great Southern for a fun and informative Vascular Education Evening and to launch our brand-new Varicose Vein Treatment Service! 🎉🩺

Dr Mahmoud Al-Najjar led the night with insights on early detection and the minimally invasive treatments now available right here in Albany. One of the biggest wins? Local patients can now avoid long trips to Perth for care faster, easier, and closer to home. 🙌

After some great case studies and a lively Q&A, the night wrapped up with plenty of connection and conversation.

Martlie Horn, our General Manager/Director of Nursing, captured it perfectly:
"Our facility has enabled specialist practitioners like Dr Al-Najjar and others across surgical and procedural disciplines to expand their private practice from Perth to Albany.

For patients in the Great Southern, the establishment of local venous services has been a game changer, significantly reducing wait times and eliminating the need to travel for many procedures."

Since opening in 2019, Albany Day Hospital has been committed to bringing specialist-led care closer to home and events like this show just how far we’ve come.

Here’s to more learning, collaboration, and great healthcare for the Great Southern region! ✨

New Vascular Service at Albany Day Hospital – Welcome Dr Mahmoud Al-Najjar!

Albany Day Hospital is delighted to welcome Dr Mahmoud Al-Najjar, a highly experienced Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon with more than 18 years of surgical expertise in Australia and abroad. Originally from Ottawa, Canada, Dr Al-Najjar has trained alongside some of Australia’s most respected vascular pioneers — Professor Paul Norman (Perth), the late Professor Philip Walker (Brisbane), and the late Associate Professor Michael Denton (Melbourne).

In Albany, Dr Al-Najjar now offers patients access to advanced, minimally invasive treatment for varicose veins, including radiofrequency ablation, VenaSeal (glue abolition), and ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy (UGFS) — meaning local patients no longer need to travel to Perth for modern vein care.

Beyond Albany, Dr Al-Najjar also provides specialist care for complex vascular conditions across WA, including aneurysm surgery, angioplasty and stenting, aortic and endovascular procedures, renal access for dialysis, and carotid artery surgery/stenting.

He continues to offer services in Geraldton, Bunbury, Perth, and Mandurah, ensuring regional communities have access to high-quality vascular care closer to home.

✨ This new service marks an important step forward in bringing specialist vascular care to the Great Southern community.

Please join us in welcoming Dr Al-Najjar to the Albany Day Hospital team! 💚

Each November, people around the world 🌎 unite to raise awareness and funds for men’s health through Movember - focusing on mental health and su***de prevention, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer.

Our hospital is proud to support this important cause. Movember isn’t just about growing a moustache it’s about starting conversations that can save lives and reminding one another that it’s okay to talk about health, both physical and mental.

Across our national hospital network, team members are getting involved by growing a mo, hosting events, and spreading awareness. Whether it’s a freshly sprouted moustache, a walk with colleagues, or a chat over coffee ☕ about mental wellbeing, every action makes a difference.

Here’s how you can join in:
〰️ Grow: Sport your mo proudly this Movember.
〰️ Move: Run, walk, cycle, or swim 60km for the 60 men lost to su***de every hour across the globe.
〰️ Host: Bring people together from morning teas to team challenges to spark meaningful conversations.
〰️ Donate: Support a colleague or contribute directly at movember.com.

Together, we can help change the face of men’s health one conversation, one moustache, and one movement at a time 💚

Today, the world’s attention turns to World Sight Day 👁️ – a global initiative dedicated to eye care awareness and equitable access.

This year’s theme, 💚 encourages everyone to prioritise their eye health — at home, at work, and in everyday life.

Protecting your vision can be as simple as:

〰️ Taking regular screen breaks by following the 20-20-20 rule – every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds
〰️ Wearing sunglasses and a hat for UV protection
〰️ Eating a balanced diet rich in antioxidants, omega-3s, vitamins, and minerals to help slow macular degeneration and diabetes-related vision loss
〰️ Quitting smoking
〰️ Wearing safety glasses in hazardous environments
〰️ Scheduling routine eye checks every two years, or more often if you’re at risk

Our hospital is proud to support better eye health by providing high-quality ophthalmic care to our local community.

Take time to love your eyes this World Sight Day 💙. Book an eye test 👓 if your vision has changed, and encourage others to do the same.

🧡 World Patient Safety Day – Teamwork in Action

Today is World Patient Safety Day, and at our hospital we’re highlighting the importance of surgical safety through the power of teamwork.

A key part of this is Team Time Out – a brief pause before surgery where the team confirms the patient’s identity, the procedure, and the surgical site. This critical step which forms part of the World Health Organisation’s Surgical Safety Checklist enhances communication, prevents errors, and keeps patient safety front of mind.

This July marked the fifth year of Time Out audits across our hospital network, and it was our biggest and best yet! Every one of our 22 hospitals participated, with 462 doctors audited by Nexus Hospitals nursing champions – the highest level of engagement to date – further strengthening the compliance and collaboration across our theatres.

A huge thank you to our doctors and employees who made this year such a success, and our Chief Medical Officer Anthony Chambers for leading this important initiative. Patient safety starts with our teams around the table and together we’re making every check count.

💛 Today is R U OK? Day 💛

Caring for people is at the heart of everything we do not just for our patients, but for each other.

R U OK? Day is an important reminder to check in with the people around us. A simple, genuine “Are you okay?” can open the door to a conversation that makes all the difference.

In healthcare, we’re often busy giving our best to others, and it’s easy to miss the small signs that a colleague or friend might be struggling. You don’t need to have all the answers - just being present, listening without judgment, and encouraging support can truly help.

We encourage everyone today, and every day, to:
✔️ Check in with someone you care about
✔️ Listen with empathy
✔️ Encourage seeking help when needed
✔️ Take time to look after your own wellbeing too

Our hospital is committed to building a culture of kindness, compassion, and connection. Thank you to our incredible team for all that you do not just today, but every day.

Let's keep the conversations going. 💛

💗 Women’s Health Week: Say yes to your health, it’s worth it.

This week we're proud to support Women’s Health Week and encourage our clinicians, staff, and patients to put their well-being first. It’s more than awareness—it’s your reminder to prioritise your health.

This week’s focus:

✅ Every check matters: Stay up-to-date with routine checks and screenings.
🧭 Take the lead: Come prepared—use the right info and tools to get more from your appointments.
❤️ Heart smart: Heart disease affects women in ways often overlooked—let’s talk about it.
🦋 Pain to power: Pain isn’t “just part of being a woman.” You don’t have to push through it alone.
🧠 Be kind to your mind: Caring for mental health is just as important as caring for your body.

Our commitment:

🩺 Encouraging regular health checks and early screening
🧠 Providing confidential mental health support through TELUS Health
🌱 Supporting wellness programs across our national hospital network
🗣️ Fostering a workplace where women feel safe to speak up, seek support and be recognised

To all the women in our hospital and local community: your health matters. We celebrate you, we stand beside you, and we’re here for you. 💗
