Gabor Maté’s book Scattered Minds has been opening my eyes again. He reminds us that what we often call a disorder is really an impairment in attention and presence. It is not simply genetic. Genes may make us more sensitive or open to the experience, yet the biggest influence is the environment around the child, especially the parent’s ability to be present.

When life is full and parents are pulled in many directions, children learn to turn inward and entertain themselves in scattered ways. It is a bit like snacking on junk food all day. You keep eating but never feel truly satisfied because your body did not receive what it really needed. Attention can be like that too. Fast. Hungry. Never settled.

Maté writes,
“There are things I wish I had not done during my children's early years, but mostly I regret what I did not do: give my children the gift of mindful, secure and reliable parental presence. I wish I had known how to allow myself to relax, to release myself from the compulsions driving me, and to fully enjoy the wonderful little persons they were.”

This is why I love working with parents. I support them to slow down, connect, and be in the moment. To breathe. To notice their child. To accept their child as they are and not as they fear they should be. When parents soften their nervous system and come back to the present, children feel safe to settle too.

Presence is not a perfect performance. It is a practice. It is a choice we keep returning to, one warm moment at a time.

Week three of our Unschooling journey with Paige and Oaklan.

In this episode we celebrate the small signs of nervous system recovery. We talk about why strollers and prams can be essential for older or ambulant children, especially when the world feels too big or too fast. We also explore community access, safety, and how to get around getting funding for a pram/stroller through the NDIS because of 'restrictive practices'.

If your child is struggling at school or finds public spaces overwhelming, this episode will give you understanding and hope.

Season 2 has come to a close - and my heart is full.

Episode 10, Every Colour Matters, of The Empowered Parent Podcast with Dana Baltutis is now live - my closing reflection on this season of neurodiversity.

This season held so many real, raw and important conversations -
about voice, autonomy, safety, belonging, and reshaping the environments that shape our neurodivergent population.
I am deeply grateful to every guest who trusted me,
and to every one of you who listened with an open heart.

If there is one message I want to leave you with, it is this:

Neurodiversity is not a problem to solve - it is a truth to honour.
Every way of thinking, sensing, relating and learning deserves to be understood, not fixed.

Thank you for walking this journey with me.
For seeing beyond behaviour.
For choosing compassion over compliance.
For believing that every human, deserves a place where they feel safe to be who they are.

And while Season 2 is officially closing, we’re not done.

We are currently airing a limited Unschooling Series with Paige Carter of Inclusive Oak.
So keep listening, keep leaning in. There is more to learn, more to unlearn, and more to become.

The rainbow stretches across the sky – vibrant, diverse, and complete only because each colour exists. This powerful metaphor frames our season finale on neurodiversity, reminding us that human brains, like rainbows, aren't meant to be identical. ...

Ever wondered what happens before and after a therapy session at My Therapy House?

Here’s a glimpse of Nikita thoughtfully setting up her space- choosing the right toys, arranging materials, and creating an inviting environment that helps each child feel calm, curious, and ready to connect.
And after the session, you’ll see her quietly packing away, reflecting the same care and mindfulness she began with. Every step- from setup to clean-up, is part of the therapeutic process.

At My Therapy House, we believe therapy isn’t just what happens during the session- it’s the preparation, intention, and love that surround it. 🪴

✨ Because connection starts long before the child enters the room, and it lingers even after they leave.

I am so excited to share that my second book, Attuned Workplaces: Creating a Future Where Neurodiversity Belongs, is now officially on its way to publication.

As a neurodivergent speech pathologist and employer, I have spent the last decade building spaces where people feel seen, safe, and able to contribute in ways that honour how their brains work.

This book is an invitation to leaders, employers, and organisations who are ready to move beyond basic inclusion
into real attunement - where sensory needs are not an afterthought, communication differences are understood, and belonging is not conditional on masking.

Neurodiversity is not a problem to fix.
It is a strength to design for.

Thank you to everyone who has walked this path with me so far. The future of work is already changing.
I cannot wait to share more with you as we move closer to launch.

And if you are an Occupational Therapist wanting to join our amazing team in 2026, please reach out to us ❤️

Parents! What fills up your cup? What brings you joy? Who are the people that hold space for you so that you can be the ‘safe hands’ for your child?

At My Therapy House, we often talk about the Circle of Security, and how we can be the ‘safe hands’ for the children we work with, but what about their parents? In our clinical experience, when we as therapists hold the parents, they are in a much better position to show up consistently, be the parent their child needs, and be the ‘safe hands’ for their child. If you’d like support with this, we’d love to hear from you!

Here, we see one of our speech pathologists Maria doing her traditional Greek dancing that brings her so much joy! Doing this gives her pep in her step when working with clients in the clinic 😉

One of the things we value deeply at My Therapy House is the power of true teamwork.

Here are Maria and Nikita - two of our speech pathologists - collaborating on a client report together. They may not both work directly with this child in sessions, but as a multidisciplinary team we always bring shared insight, perspective, and care to every piece of documentation we create.

We don’t just “write reports.”
We think deeply about each child - their development, their strengths, their regulation, their relationships, and what will genuinely support them moving forward.

It’s a privilege to work in a team where every report is thoughtful, intentional, and written with the child and family at the centre.

This is what heart-led, neuroaffirming practice looks like.
