When OT and Speech Work Together

Families are often surprised by how efficiently occupational therapists and speech pathologists work together.

Both teams support kids and young people to build everyday skills – just from slightly different angles.

Here are some times they may team up:

😤 Big feelings in busy places

An OT may focus on sensory regulation, coping strategies, and attention in noisy environments…

While a speech pathologist supports the child to understand instructions and express their feelings.

🍽️ Mealtimes and picky eating

An OT might look at posture, sensory sensitivities, and fine motor skills (such as using cutlery)…

While a speech pathologist considers chewing, swallowing and the language and the social side.

📚 School and learning

An OT may work on handwriting, sitting posture, organisation and focus…

While a speechie assists with understanding classroom language and following instructions.

🛝 Friendships and play

An OT can help with play skills, turn-taking, and motor planning for participating in activities…

While a speechie supports social communication, conversation skills, and reading non-verbal cues.

When OT and Speech work together, kids aren’t doing “more therapy”, they’re getting a joined-up plan that supports the same goals from different directions, with families at the centre.

If you’re ever unsure which therapist is the “right” one, it’s okay to simply start the conversation 😊

Therapy in Action looks like play with purpose 🤹🏻‍♀️

For example this parachute becomes a way to build regulation, turn-taking, timing, and motor planning!

We start with what matters to the child (having fun, staying engaged), then layer skills: moving together, waiting for a cue, being aware of where the balls roll, and planning the next move 💭

These are the foundations that transfer to daily life!

…calmer routines, joining group activities, following instructions at school, and feeling self-confident ☀️

OT Week 2025: Therapy in Action!

To us, Therapy in Action means practical, goal-focused support that helps children and teens participate more fully in everyday life 🌤️

Occupational therapy is about the activities that matter like getting ready for school, joining in at sports, moving with confidence, building routines, and feeling calm and connected with family.

Our OTs work alongside young people and their families to co-design powerful supports that are:

🔍 Strengths-based and evidence-informed

✔️ Family-centred and functional in real settings
(home, school, community, or via Telehealth)

💡 Purposeful and interest-based, building skills in self-care, self-regulation, motor planning, attention, and organisation

This is where small wins add up to big change!

We’d like to thank our OTs Arisse, Hin, and Keri for always being compassionate problem-solvers 🕵🏻‍♀️

Communication looks different for every child.

Our Speech Pathologists work with families to build confidence, clarity and connection - whether that’s spoken language, AAC, or other ways of expressing their needs.

The aim is practical progress that carries into home life, the classroom, and in the community!

We have appointments available from 2026 🗓️

Where it helps, a school-based option may be arranged within 20 or so minutes of Modbury, but clinic sessions remain our primary setting so that routines are consistent and easy to plan.

Does your child need an OT in 2026?

Our Occupational Therapists focus on the skills that make daily life run smoother for kids and families.

These include building regulation, confidence, and practical habits that support getting ready, learning, play, friendships, and winding down too.

We take a family-centred, neuroaffirming approach and tailor support to what matters most to you.

The best first step is a parent-only session 👥

Visit our website to enquire. We’ll share our intake outline, expected timing for 2026, and let you know what’s helpful to bring to your first appointment 😊

Before we meet your child, we meet you!

Our parent-only session is simply a calm, practical chat with one of our OTs to understand day-to-day life, what’s already in place, and what matters most to you and your family 💭

It gives you space to share the wins, worries, and hopes for the year ahead so we can shape therapy around your child, not the other way around.

This includes:
• Reviewing home, school and community routines
• Talking through what’s working (and what is not)
• Setting up a clear goals list for the year together
• Completing a sensory checklist to guide the plan
• Agree on roles: What we’ll do in clinic and what you’ll practise at home for carryover

Feel free to have a look through our website to see whether we seem like a fit for your family goals 😊

Between school pick-ups, homework, or dinner, 5 quick minutes of simple rhythm can work wonders!

Sit together, find a steady beat, and tap along 🎶

Copy each other, swap leaders, try fast then slow, loud then soft. No drum? A container and wooden spoons do the job nicely.

A short burst of rhythm is fast, fun and grounding!

It gives little bodies the right kind of sensory input, builds turn-taking, and listening skills — (and helps everyone settle before the next part of the day) 🙂
