Equal Access Disability Access Consultants

Equal Access Disability Access Consultants Equal Access are passionate about the environment being accessible to everyone.

Equal Access Pty Ltd Accredited Disability Access Consultants (regiseted with ACAA) was formed by Bruce Bromley in response to a growing recognition, that whilst businesses were being urged to respond to their obligations under the Disability Discrimination Act, that the majority of assistance available was focused almost entirely upon the needs of the individual with a disability without an understanding of the impacts and practicalities for businesses and building designers/ consultants. Equal Access was born from our passion for creating an environment that is accessible to all. We are driven by the desire to deliver a high quality consultancy service to the professionals that will shape this environment. We specialise in providing practical, sensible advice on disability access issues, including the Disability Discrimination Act, Building Code of Australia and Suite of Australian Standards, to a variety of organisations in both the public and private sectors.

A recent update to The Disability (Access to Premises – Buildings) Standards 2010 (DAPS) came into effect on November 23, 2024. Among the changes was the inclusion of a reference to the 2021 edition of ‘AS 1428.1 Design for Access and Mobility, Part 1: General Requirements for People with Disabilities‘ replacing the 2009 edition. What do these changes mean for practitioners, and how do they interact with the National Construction Code?

Chris Flynn from our office does a deep dive into what is new.

DAPS updated on Nov 23, 2024, now references ‘AS 1428.1:2021’ for accessibility, replacing the 2009 edition. Practitioners must align designs with the new standards and the National Construction Code.

Love These emails.

Hi Bruce,

I personally would like to thank you for the marvellous training that you gave us all yesterday.

No doubt that it was a benefit to all that attended and the information that you provide was extremely useful to all. As Council have many

Buildings servicing the public I am sure that your training will go a long way with staff dealing with any future works or upgrades to these facilities.

As I have used your services for quite a number of years now, I was surprised and delighted that I to also pick up a number of useful bits of information.

Once again, Many Thanks for all your time and efforts regarding your Workshop training.

If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to call me.

Kind Regards

Why ‘Wave to Open’ and ‘Wave to Lock’ Discriminate against People with Disability

This type of door control, in my opinion, discriminates against people with vision impairment and also people who are Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD), especially those for whom English is not their first language. Will they be able to comprehend what is required?

♿ Trapped in a Hotel Room over Christmas ♿

Amber Furlong checked into her accessible hotel room in Noosa on 24 December 2023 as part of a family holiday. Her room was on the 3rd floor of her hotel wing, serviced by a single lift. On 26 December, Amber discovered whilst heading for a swim for therapy that the single lift servicing her floor had broken down following severe storms.

If lift failure occurs, this can leave people vulnerable if they are trapped within a hotel room with no way of exiting due to lift failure.
