Forward head posture, jaw development, tongue ties, incorrect swallow patterns, mobile phone use...these can all cause restrictions in the muscle attachments of the hyoid bone - the floating bone in your throat involved in swallowing πŸ‘…

Because of developmental and lifestyle factors, these muscle attachments can become very restricted, making swallowing difficult.

Treatment includes releasing these muscles, as well as assessing the nerves that control the muscles and improving feedback to the brain, and targeted exercises to improve the functioning of the muscles involved in swallowing.

Head, neck, and throat traumas are also contributing factors that need to be considered.

Because of this, I don't always release these muscles myself, but rather guide my clients how to release them themselves, so they have complete control, as it can be quite triggering for some people.

As promised, the quick and easy morning manual lymphatic facial drainage routine if you wake up with jaw pain, or you clench or grind your teeth.

πŸ’œStep1. Gently rub above/behind the collarbone at the base of the neck. This is your termini where all of your lymphatic fluid drains.

πŸ’œStep 2. Join the base of the palms and gently wrap your fingers around your neck, gently massaging backwards and down towards the termini.

πŸ’œStep 3. Make the peace sign with your fingers, placing one in front and one behind the ear and rub.

πŸ’œStep 4. Hook your fingers under the jawbone and glide back towards your ear.

πŸ’œStep 5. Gently press into the sinuses beside the nose, inhaling gently through the nose.

That's it!!! πŸ™ŒπŸ»

This routine is especially helpful for anyone who wakes up with jaw pain from clenching or grinding their teeth, as this causes the lymph to become congested.

The head and neck are a huge congestion point for lymphatic fluid.

And most importantly...all this wont help if your tongue is not on the roof of your mouth!!!πŸ‘…

This is why I now always check for breathing and nervous system dysregulation when clients present to me with back pain.

Back pain is often a result of a breathing problem.

Airway issues can present with so many symptoms that we need to treat the body GLOBALLY, not just where the symptoms are present.

Mouth breathing is a modern epidemic. We see the link in mouth breathing to an increase in TMJD, sleep disorders, ADHD symptoms, and cardiovascular disease, to name a few.

Where the pain ends up is rarely where the problem started.

If you receive soft tissue therapy or bodywork for your jaw pain or TMJD, that's great! πŸ‘πŸ»

There may be a piece missing, however, that is preventing the needle from really shifting with your symptoms.

Most therapists approach TMJD by addressing the muscles (which feels amazing, BTW!). However, it's only one part of the picture.

Those muscles are controlled by cranial nerves, which is why activating those nerves really starts to shift things in a way that working with the muscles alone does not.

This applies not only to TMJD and jaw pain but for any type of musculoskeletal issues.

Having a therapist who understands not only the muscles but the nerves that control them is where the magic happens ✨️

The way you breathe has a PROFOUND impact on the way your face develops, on your energy levels, your sleep quality, and your overall wellbeing!

More than just a cosmetic concern, the developmental changes that occur with mouth breathing can either impact your long-term health for better or worse.

Low tongue posture and mouth breathing are both linked to dental diseases as well as cardiovascular disease.

They also impact the airway, which determines our overall health with regards to how well our cells are oxygenated.

Low tongue posture and mouth breathing also impact jaw development and lead to TMJ problems as we get older.

TMJ Therapy gets to the root cause of mouth breathing, low tongue posture, airway and breathing problems, and associated TMJD and jaw pain.

A toothache is the WORST!!!🦷😭

And if you have gone down the rabbit hole with your dentist trying to figure out what's wrong and they're stumped... here's what they may be missing...

πŸ‘‰πŸΌ LYMPHATICS
Your teeth, gums, bone sockets, and oral connective tissue all have lymphatic vessels that drain into the lymph nodes under the jaw. Pain in these lymph nodes could indicate there is a problem with the lymphatic drainage of the teeth.

πŸ‘‰πŸΌFASCIA
Fascia is full body connective tissue that links every structure in the body, including the teeth.
Fascial drag from a misaligned jaw, incorrect bite, TMJD issues, scar tissue, or tension elsewhere in the body can create pain or pressure in a tooth - even if there is no dental issue present.

πŸ‘‰πŸΌREFERRED MUSCLE PAIN
Various muscles in the head, neck, and jaw refer pain to the upper and lower teeth, particularly due to trigger points, often the result of bruxism (clenching and grinding)

So before you go getting perfectly healthy teeth removed, consider addressing the above with TMJ Therapy.

Just in case anyone is being gaslit by someone telling them that their teeth clenching and grinding is from stress... RUN!

All the buccal massage in the world is not going to break the habit (although it's amazing if you are clenching!πŸ™ŒπŸ»)

You need to understand the ROOT CAUSE and get your muscles and airway assessed to really be able to break the habit.

Has a medical professional told you that it's just stress?

These are some of the questions that I get asked all the time, so let's answer them! πŸ€“

πŸ‘‰πŸΌ Night Guards:
A night guard is often offered as a solution to clenching and grinding. However, this is a band-aid solution at best as it only works to protect the teeth and not stop the clenching and grinding habit. I've had many clients chew right through their night guards!😬

πŸ‘‰πŸΌ Snoring/sleep apnoea:
TMJ Therapy gets to the root cause of clenching and grinding, which is primarily an airway issue! I work with you to address your airway dysfunction and strengthen the airway to reduce your airway obstruction.

πŸ‘‰πŸΌ Headaches and migraines:
TMJ symptoms often go hand in hand with headaches and migraines due to the referred pain patterns caused by muscle dysfunction. By addressing the referred pain and releasing the trigger points, we can greatly reduce your headaches.

πŸ‘‰πŸΌ Tinnitus:
Due to the ears close proximity to the TMJ's, as well as the common muscle dysfunction and compensation patterns that arise in the surrounding structures, your Tinnitus and ringing in the ears can be the result of TMJ dysfunction.

πŸ‘‰πŸΌ Surgery and Botox:
Surgery is only needed in rare and extreme cases as the primary cause of TMJ dysfunction is a muscular one! Botox is another band-aid solution that does not address the root cause and can even make TMJD worse in the long run!

Let me know in the poll below if you suffer with any of these symptoms and will reach out and let you know how I can helpπŸ™ŒπŸ»
