Today, on World Autism Awareness Day, we celebrate the incredible strengths, individuality, and potential of every child on the autism spectrum 💙
At our paediatric physiotherapy practice, we are proud to support children with autism in ways that are meaningful, respectful, and tailored to each child’s unique needs.
We work collaboratively with families and other therapists to achieve the best outcomes because we know that every child communicates, moves, and experiences the world differently.
Our goal is not to change who a child is, but to empower them to move confidently, participate fully, and thrive in their own way.

🎮 Balance Training with Interactive Technology
Balance training doesn’t always look like traditional therapy! Using interactive tools like the Wii Fit and GoBalance System, children can work on important physical skills while having fun.
These electronic balance systems provide real-time feedback, helping children improve balance, coordination, weight shifting, and body awareness. The games and challenges keep children motivated and engaged, making therapy feel more like play than exercise.
This type of training is especially helpful for developing postural control, core stability, and confidence with movement. This type of training improves skills which support everyday activities such as walking, running, and playing with friends.
When therapy is interactive and fun, children are more engaged and eager to keep improving! 🫶

Walking Frames & Independence 👣
At Paediatric Physiotherapy Centre, we use walking frames extensively to support children to get up on their feet and explore their environment.
Being upright and weight-bearing is so important. It allows children to build strength, develop motor skills, and experience their world from a new perspective, all while fostering independence.
The type of walking frame we choose always depends on the child’s individual abilities and needs.
Some children require additional support to move safely and confidently. In one of the frames shown here, the large wheelchair-style wheels allow the child to propel themselves independently. It also includes a supportive seat to maintain upright positioning and a headrest to prevent sudden backward head movements in order to keep the child safe while exploring.
Other walking frames may be minimal in supports and light weight. We often use these during physiotherapy sessions to encourage greater core activation, active leg muscle engagement, and independent weight-bearing often without a seat or sling for support.
Where appropriate, we encourage children to propel their frame forward. This promotes active stepping and is the foundation for walking and independent mobility.
Every piece of equipment is chosen with purpose. Every child’s program is individualised. And every step forward matters. 💛

❤️Supportive Therapy Garments for Movement and Stability ❤️
Some children benefit from extra support to help their bodies feel more stable and organised during movement. Second Skin therapeutic splints and SPIO Suit (Stabilising Pressure Input Orthosis) provide gentle compression and support to key joints and muscles.
These garments can help improve postural stability, body awareness, and muscle control, making it easier for children to sit, stand, move, and participate in everyday activities.
Because they are lightweight, flexible, and comfortable to wear, many children can use them during therapy, at school, or while playing, helping them practise their movement skills throughout the day.
Small supports can make a big difference in helping children feel more confident and in control of their bodies. Talk to your physiotherapist today to determine if a compression garment is appropriate for your child.

What is Neurodiversity in Children
Neurodiversity means that a child’s brain develops and works in different ways. When a child is considered neurodivergent it means their brain processes information, learning, movement, or sensory experiences differently from other children.
Neurodivergent children may include those with conditions such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, or Tourette Syndrome.
This means a child may:
learn in different ways
move or coordinate their body differently
respond more strongly to sounds, textures, or busy environments
communicate or interact in their own unique way
Importantly, neurodiversity also recognises that these children often have wonderful strengths, such as creativity, curiosity, strong interests, problem-solving skills, or unique ways of thinking.
The goal is not to change who a child is, but to support them with the right strategies, therapy, and environment so they can feel confident, participate fully, and thrive.

Vibration Plates in Paediatric Physiotherapy. What Are the Benefits?

You may have seen the vibration plate in our clinic and wondered what it actually does. In paediatric physiotherapy, vibration therapy can be a very effective tool when used appropriately and under professional supervision.
A vibration plate delivers gentle, controlled vibrations through the feet or hands. These small movements stimulate muscles to contract reflexively and repeatedly, helping to “wake up” muscles and improve how they respond during therapy.
When clinically indicated, vibration therapy may help improve muscle activation and therefore improve strength, increase weight-bearing tolerance, support postural control, enhance bone density in children with limited mobility, improve circulation, and build body awareness. For some children with neurological conditions, it can also help muscles become more responsive before practising functional tasks.
We consider using the vibration plate when a child has difficulty activating certain muscle groups, needs support with standing tolerance, has reduced weight-bearing experience, or fatigues quickly with traditional strengthening exercises. It is always part of a broader therapy program.
When used strategically, vibration therapy can create a valuable window of opportunity where muscles are more responsive allowing children to practise standing, balance and stepping more effectively and build greater independence.
