We are so please to soon display our new Acknowledgment of Country Welcome Sign designed by Indigenous artist Alkira Austin. This will be placed at the entrance of Paediatric Physiotherapy Centre.
Brief description: Acknowledgment of Country by Alkira Austin
“Wominjeka” meaning “welcome” comes from the woiwurrung language of the Wurundjeri people, the traditional owners of the land on which we live.
In our Dreamtime stories we believe the wedge-tailed eagle known as “Bunjil” is our creator spirit. Bunjil shaped our lands, created our mountains, made our rivers, the creeks and the plants. He then created our animals and breathed life into humans.
After Bunjil had done all of this he grew tired. He asked “Waa” the crow to make a giant gust of wind which would ascend Bunjil into the sky where he would become a star in the night sky.
Bunjil is seen as the creator spirit and Waa is the protector.
In the artwork you will see Bunjil and waa both. You will also notice 3 “U” (these are symbols we use for people) shapes surrounding the acknowledgment inside of a large circle. The 3 “U” shapes represent 1. the child who comes to the centre who needs care. 2. The parent who entrusts their child into the care of the centre. 3. The therapists who deliver the life changing care for the child. The large circle represents the 3 people coming together to the centre. Bunjil is there as the people of the Kulin nations honour him as our creator, and Waa as he is still here protecting us all to this day. The design in the bottom right hand corner is a reflection of our beautiful waterways in Naarm (Melbourne).
