🎄✨ Travelling Over the Holidays with a Vestibular Condition ✈️
The festive season often means travel (planes, boats, long car rides), and busy environments. For those managing vestibular conditions, travelling can sometimes feel overwhelming. Here are a few tips from us at Equilibrium Rehab to help make your trip smoother. 🎁 Please remember it’s okay to pace yourself because the ultimate goal is to enjoy your trip not to rush through it!

If you feel dizzy, foggy, or “off” in supermarkets, shopping centers, or busy crowds… you’re not imagining it. These environments are full of fast visual movement and patterns (lights, shelves, people moving), which require your brain to process a lot of sensory information quickly. When the vestibular system is irritated or recovering, the brain often relies more heavily on vision to keep you balanced. Therefore, when there is too much visual information, the system gets overwhelmed. This is very common in conditions like vestibular hypofunction, concussion recovery, PPPD, and vestibular migraine. Research has shown that vestibular rehab can reduce visual dependency and improve your balance and confidence in visually complex environments. If this sounds like you, we're here to help! Contact us at 3342 4378 for a comprehensive assessment.
✨ NOTSA Highlights! ✨
Three of our staff recently attended the Neuro-Otology Society of Australia (NOTSA) Annual Meeting in Melbourne.
We were privileged to hear from keynote speaker Professor Raymond van de Berg, an ENT surgeon from Maastricht University Medical Centre with two PhDs! 🤯 He shared his research on bilateral vestibulopathy and the exciting progress being made with vestibular implants. A glimpse into the future of vestibular care! Across four sessions, topics ranged from digital diagnostic tools and complex case studies to promising research into the genetic origins of Meniere’s disease. We were particularly inspired by Dr David Szmulewicz’s work with Indigenous communities in Far North Queensland on Machado-Joseph disease (SCA3) and SCA7.
Of course, one of the best parts of the meeting was connecting and exchanging ideas with other passionate professionals over coffee, lunch, and dinner ☕🍴We’re already looking forward to next year’s conference!

Feeling the World Spin? You might have BPPV!
Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is one of the most common causes of vertigo! It causes a sudden spinning sensation when you move your head a certain way. It happens when tiny crystals (otoconia) in your inner ear become dislodged and move into the wrong canals.
👂Symptoms can include:
✅ Sudden dizziness when lying down, rolling in bed, or looking up
✅ Nausea or imbalance
✅ Brief episodes of vertigo lasting seconds to minutes
The good news?
BPPV is highly treatable with specialised physiotherapy techniques such as canalith repositioning maneuvers!
💡 If you're experiencing these symptoms, book in with one of our vestibular physiotherapists today. Call us on 33424378 or email us admin@equilibriumrehab.com.au.

Equilibrium Rehab was established in 1999 by Meg Richards to assist patients in Brisbane QLD who have vestibular complaints through providing specialized physiotherapy services in private outpatient vestibular rehabilitation.
Initially the focus was equally on neurological conditions, but it became evident over a number of years that there was a greater need in the wider Brisbane community for management of vestibular problems. Thus today the large majority of the practice is devoted to vestibular rehabilitation.
Although based in Moorooka we provide services to many areas in Brisbane & the Sunshine Coast through branch clinics in Nundah, Scarborough, Cleveland and now Maleny, and we also receive referrals from throughout Queensland, Northern Territory and New South Wales. We can provide consultations via Skype for clients who can’t travel easily to our Brisbane clinics following an initial face-to-face consultation in Brisbane.
We now have four experienced physiotherapists and two administration staff working for Equilibrium Rehab. We welcome new and former clients to our friendly specialised service.
