For residents of Mordialloc and neighbouring communities, the railway underpass crossing near the train stabling offers more than a mere path. It's our connection to schools, local businesses, the beach, the forthcoming swimming pool and our beloved creek. It's our way of escaping the traffic, allowing us to take our children to school, walk our dogs, fish and cycle through in peace. It is more than just a stretch of pavement - it's our vital community link.
Now, the Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP) poses a threat to our way of life, by permanently closing this treasured pathway with little to no warning or communication. Although replacement ideas have been hinted upon, there is no firm commitment from our authorities.
Indeed, the LXRP, State and local government's responsibility should go beyond making movements smoother for commuters. They should also ensure that provisions are in place to sustain our community’s harmony. A lack of direct action implies that the wellbeing of us, the residents, is being sidelined.
We urge our government authorities (LXRP, Kingston Council and Victoria State Government) to either save the existing path or replace the path they are removing. Let this serve not merely as a replacement, but a statement of assured commitment to the welfare of communities such as ours. Such commitment will showcase the government's understanding of the importance of preserving community connectivity, and respect for our quality of life.
You can aid this cause. Add your voice to ours. Together, let us urge our authorities to replace our vital connection. Sign our petition today. And please share.
