🧠🦷 Fascinating (and slightly alarming) research from South Korea: scientists have found strong evidence that oral bacteria can move into the gut and even affect the brain, potentially playing a role in Parkinson’s disease.

The study showed higher levels of Streptococcus mutans (a common oral bacterium) in people with Parkinson’s. Substances produced by these bacteria were found to travel through the bloodstream to the brain, where they may contribute to inflammation and the loss of dopamine-producing neurons.

In mouse studies, blocking this pathway significantly reduced brain inflammation and motor symptoms.

The takeaway? Oral health may be far more connected to brain health than we realised — and targeting the oral-gut microbiome could open new paths for treating Parkinson’s. 🦠➡️🧠

Immediate dentures are a great way to leave the dental chair with a smile right after extractions — they often improve your appearance instantly.

However, as the gums and bone heal over the following months, the fit naturally becomes quite loose. This is completely normal and part of the healing process.

After around 6–12 months, once things have settled, it’s usually time to start on a new, final denture to restore comfort, function, and stability. 🦷

Left vs. Right (Profile Photos)
• Before: The denture teeth sit slightly more forward and flat. This causes the upper lip to stretch a bit and look tense, with less natural curvature at the corners of the mouth. The smile line appears “fixed” rather than flowing.
• After: The teeth are set back just enough and at a softer angulation. This relaxes the lip, reduces the appearance of protrusion, and creates a smoother profile. The nasolabial fold (the crease from the nose to the corner of the mouth) looks softer and the whole lower face appears more at ease.

At Denture Point we love showing how small, precise refinements can create a huge difference in both profile and smile. In these before/after photos you can see how adjusting tooth angulation and arch form gave our patient a more relaxed lip line, softer profile, and a naturally flowing smile. Sometimes millimeters make all the difference.

😁 Top vs. Bottom (Front Smiles)
• Before: The anterior (front) teeth are slightly more upright and uniform, giving a “blocky” appearance. The incisal edges (biting edges) create a flatter smile line. The lower lip sits a little underneath, making the smile look forced.
• After: The anterior teeth have been slightly re-angled and the smile line follows the contour of the lower lip more naturally. Small adjustments in tooth length and arch form allow the corners of the mouth to lift gently. This makes the smile look broader and more spontaneous, not “stuck on.” The lip now sits comfortably against the teeth rather than being pushed out.

Second gift this week — I’m starting to feel a bit spoilt! 😅 One of my favourite patients surprised me with a diffuser full of little seashells (who even knew that was a thing? 🐚).
Safe to say my Wednesday morning was off to a cracking start. At this rate, I might need a bigger shelf for all the goodies… 😁
