Quick tips to reduce sugar cravings

🍭Include protein in meals, particularly your first meal of the day. Protein helps to maintain consistency in blood sugar levels and will also help to make you feel fuller for longer. Great protein sources include fish, chicken, legumes and beans, red meat, tempeh, tofu, nuts and seeds, and eggs.

🍭Consider whether your sweet cravings are emotional and whether that sweet treat is because you are feeling flat, stressed or emotional. Addressing mental health may be essential for beating sugar cravings.

🍭On average sugar cravings last around 10 minutes so sometimes a distraction can do the trick. Before you reach for the chocolate try distracting yourself with some other activity.

🍭When Oestrogen drops off a day or two prior to your period so does its protective effect on blood sugar regulation. Rather than smashing that block of chocolate consider some healthier alternatives such as dark chocolate or a homemade healthy treat sweetened with stevia, monk fruit sweetener or xylitol.

Passionflower (Passiflora Incarnata)

Passionflower is one of my favourite herbs in clinic and is one that I have dispensed a lot throughout the last two years living through a pandemic.

Studies show Passionflower is soothing on the nervous system and can be useful in anxiety, stress, menopausal symptoms, PMS, pain and insomnia.

Passionflower is thought to work by increasing gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a chemical that the brain produces to reduce excitability in the nervous system.

Some secrets for better smoothies 🍉🥬🥒

As the weather warms smoothies can become the breakfast of choice. Quick and convenient, they can be ideal for a breakfast to go. Here are a few quick tips for enhancing flavour and nutrition.

🍉Add a cup of greens to your blend for a nutrient kick - baby spinach, rocket and kale are all great options for iron, antioxidants, fibre, potassium, vitamin c….

🍉Add super food for increased antioxidants, adaptogens and nutrients. Try Cacao, spirulina, Maca, açai or matcha powder

🍉Frozen bananas are great for a hint of sweetness and make a smoothie thick and creamy

🍉Consider a protein powder - my favourite is h**p protein as its a complete protein (contains all of the essential amino acids that humans must get from food) but doesn’t have the inflammatory issues that I regularly see with whey protein

🍉Consider spice. Cardamon, turmeric and cinnamon are all packed with nutrients and can give a smoothie some zing

🌿 Iron deficiency 🌿

Iron deficiency is super common. Menstruating women need a higher intake of iron but are often not meeting their needs.

Symptoms of iron deficiency

There are a whole range of symptoms associated with iron deficiency including:

✨ Extreme fatigue
✨ Shortness of breath
✨ Fast heartbeat
✨ Cold hands and feet
✨ Restless legs
✨ Poor appetite
✨ Light headedness or dizziness
Weakness

As these symptoms can also apply to other conditions it is essential to test iron levels.

Vegetarian vs meat sources:

The rise in vegetarian/vegan diets has certainly impacted iron status. While there are plenty of vegetarian sources of iron (legumes, wholegrain cereals and green vegetables), unfortunately plant based iron is less easily absorbed. In fact it has been estimated that only 5-12% of plant based iron is absorbed.

Supplementing:

Anyone who has supplemented iron in the past knows that not all supplements are the same.
Some supplements can cause digestive discomfort including constipation, diarrhoea and pain. Testing to determine iron status is essential and seek guidance from your practitioner as to which iron supplement is right for you.

“PMS is common but that doesn’t make it normal”

💗Symptom free periods are attainable for most women.💗

Irritability, headaches, migraines, breast tenderness, changes to sleep, acne, fatigue, heavy periods and hair loss can all be signs of a hormonal imbalance.

Let’s talk testing and treatment.

🥦 Calcium 🥦

You have more calcium in your body than any other mineral.

We know its essential for bone health but it is also vital for nerve signalling, muscle function and heart health.

How much do you need?

Children aged 4-18 need 1300mg/day
Adults 1200mg/day
Women over 50 and everyone over 70 need 1200mg/day

While dairy is the most easily absorbed form of calcium there are many other sources that are plant based.

Calcium sources:

1 tbs Chia seeds = 126mg (and awesome omega 3, protein and fibre)

1 cup of dairy yoghurt = 400mg

1 cup of cooked broccoli = 180mg

1/2 cup regular tofu = 240mg

1 cup cooked oats = 125mg

1 cup cooked spinach = 240mg

Consider your calcium intake and incorporate more calcium rich foods where possible.

If you are concerned that your intake may be insufficient make an appointment to discuss nutritional changes and supplementation if necessary.
