We all know that eating healthy can protect our vision and keep you healthy, but which foods should we be looking 👀 out for?

Research shows that eating foods high in eye-friendly nutrients, like lutein and zeaxanthin, vitamin C, vitamin E and zinc, reduces the risk of certain eye diseases like age-related macular degeneration and cataracts.

These nutrients are typically found in green leafy vegetables, fruits and nuts.

Here are the top 10 eye health foods:

Fish - a great source of omega-3, for nourishing the retina and keeping eyes hydrated.

Green Leafy Veg - packed with lutein and zeaxanthin, for retina health.

Carrots - a great source of vitamin A, to keep your cornea clear.

Berries and Citrus - high in Vitamin C, for maintaining collagen found in the cornea and protecting the delicate capillaries in the retina.

Nuts - an excellent source of Vitamin E and zinc which may decrease your risk of age-related macular degeneration.

Legumes and Pulses - high in protein and fibre, they are also full of omega-3.

Seeds - high in omega-3s and vitamin E to help fight age-related eye health issues and help protect your retina.

Eggs - high in lutein and zeaxanthin as well as vitamin C and E, thought to be helpful against macular degeneration.

Lean Meat - rich in vitamin A and zinc, to benefit your cornea and retina.

Extra-virgin olive oil - helps your body absorb lutein and zeaxanthin, vital for good eye health

How often should I be checked for glaucoma?

Once diagnosed, your eye care practitioner will suggest how frequently you should be reviewed, once your treatment is effective and your glaucoma is stable. When you start taking medication, when your medication is changed, or if your glaucoma is not stable, you might need to attend more appointments. Your eye care practitioner will give you advice on the recommended frequency of visits based on your unique circumstances.

You should visit your optometrist and begin glaucoma screenings by the age of 35 if you have never had one. Your best defence against glaucoma-related vision loss is early detection through routine, thorough eye exams.

If you are a patient requiring specialist eye care, please ensure you have a valid referral from your optometrist or GP.

3 benefits of LASIK 👀

1️⃣ Life Becomes Easy
Imagine saying goodbye to glasses and contact lenses and being able to perform simple tasks like checking an alarm clock, reading a menu in dim light or checking instructions for medications without fumbling for your glasses. If you are an athlete, the days of fogged glasses, or reliance on contact lenses, are over after laser vision correction.

2️⃣ Save Time & Money
The time and hassle of fitting and caring for contact lenses also becomes a thing of the past. Plus, in the long term, laser vision correction is the more economical choice.

3️⃣ Environmentally Friendly
Then there’s the environmental impact! A daily contact lens wearer uses over 14,000 disposable lenses over the course of 20 years. Then, there’s the solutions and packaging.

In the long run, LASIK surgery is better for the environment, better for your pocket and better for your eyes.

We’re currently offering FREE assessments for laser eye correction right here at Peninsula Eye Centre on the Mornington Peninsula.

If you choose to proceed, your procedure will be performed at our laser eye clinic, Vista Eyes Laser Eye Clinic, located in Elsternwick, Melbourne.

June is Cataract Awareness Month.

Did you know that about half of all Australians aged over 50 have some form of cataract, and by the age of 80, almost everyone develops cataracts?

Globally, cataracts are the leading cause of blindness. Whilst genetics, sunlight exposure, smoking, diabetes and other factors may influence the development of cataracts, ageing is the most common cause.

If you are a patient requiring specialist cataract assessment, please ensure you have a valid referral from your optometrist or GP.
