What do we get out of our negative behaviours?

Something that we have been exploring in our house this week is the thought around what we get out of our negative behaviours. It’s fascinating to consider the underlying motives and unspoken needs that may drive these actions.

When we feel low, do we really crave nourishment and rest? When we need others to be our voice, do we crave connection and validation? When we complain, are we looking for comraderie? For someone to share our grievances...

What is it that we truly desire and what would it look like if we fostered a healthier way of expressing this? What if we learned to ask for what we needed instead of a thinly veiled behaviour that actually feels a little off. Most of all though, what is it that you really get out of the situation.

This is something that I commonly see in clinic, especially with women desiring weight loss. How did we get there in the first place and what is the pay off. Is it armour, numbing or protection/safety? If we start loosing the weight will there be fear and self sabotage?

I love exploring our psychology, often we can not see it for ourselves until we speak it. A common saying in my clinic is "when you are inside the jar, you can not see the label." Simply meaning that often it is difficult to see the reasons/patterns or actions because we are the ones acting it out.

If you have ever wondered why you keep coming back to the same place time and time again, maybe it is worth exploring this a little deeper. Gaining understanding of yourself means that we no longer project our wounded selves. We can come from an entirely different place altogether.

Can I just address AI for a minute?

I have a bit of a love hate thing going on here!

I love, love, love that I can use this tech to help me take notes! Oh my goodness, what a difference this makes! It is no secret that I can get so involved in the conversation that I almost forget to write much down. I very easily get wrapped up in a consult like I am talking to a friend and then realise that I need to document, but don't want to lose eye contact. This is a freaking game changer. In a safe and secure environment it can summarise and dot point all topics covered. I am stupidly excited about this! Stupidly excited!

Where I am at war with AI is the computer generated images, the fake videos and honestly the generated words. I know that there are some industries that love these features. I get the worth, its just not for me!
I take considerable time and thought around what I want to say and how I want to deliver the information. I accidentally clicked "polish" in an email once and even though I sounded waaaay smarter and more proficient, it really did not sound like me. That is not how I speak with a client and I would be horrified if my clients thought that they were getting a generated reply.

So please, I want it noted that I will not respond to your questions, emails and personal shares with an artificial reply. I may send you an annoying video that I have created to explain a thing that I explain almost every consult, but you are absolutely assured to see my ugly face, not a smooth manufactured one!

I remember when I first started supporting and learning about myself and which environments that I function best in, it was hard. I had big emotions that I didnt know what to do with, frustration with my own consistency or lack thereof and I really just needed someone to understand what I was shifting through.
I wholly and truly believe that as a practitioner, we need to be able to hand ourselves over to another professional for the best possible outcome. A large part of it for me personally was simply for the accountability. I could easily abandon myself but my goodness, I would never let my practitioner be disappointed in my actions or lack of.
While it is absolutely true that as a practitioner, we never judge, that was my personal fear. This is something that I acknowledge and now use to my advantage until I am clear enough to do it for myself.
Something you will often hear in my clinic room is that "I want YOU to want this more for you than I do." Finding that pivotal point is where your trajectory changes completely, but first you need the support to get you there. Once we have established this, you are unstoppable.
If you are ready, Im here for you.

Its no secret that I have been diving into further education, Im a life long learner and it inspires me to look at different perspectives.
As a personal challenge, I like to explore the exact opposite to my own beliefs to see what else I can learn. This can sometimes be incredibly triggering and sometimes I completely change my perspective too!
Something that continually fascinates me is our psychology. Why we think the way we do, what comes up when we are challenged in our beliefs and especially how we behave when we are triggered by ourselves or others. This is something that I see play out quite a bit, but my interest is deepened by what goes on in our own minds. The place that we may not ever really let others in, just in case we are a little too dark and twisty for them and sometimes we simply do not feel fit for human consumption.
One thing I know to be absolutely true for myself (especially when I am a little dark and twisty) is that I can not return to a more balanced individual while I am in the same environment that got me here.

What might that mean?

It simply means that the same old way of doing things, will not create change.
There are some really basic things that will shift my "not fit for human consumption" self into "slightly more palatable." These things are not the same for everyone though and here lies the discovery part.
When I say that I am a lifetime learner, I mean that across every aspect. Including learning about myself and this can be done from what I notice in the garden to what I may be watching at night.

So.... compliments of Grays Anatomy reruns lol, I propose three massive questions!

Do you know who you are?
Do you know how you got here?
Is this how you want to live?

Big huh!

We do have choice but sometimes we need support in making those choices or accountability in keeping them. Something that I can openly say and know to be true is that the world is definitely a better place with you in it and if I can help you find your way, it would truly be my honour.
