What would you do if a seemingly perfect child in your care became pale, floppy and unconscious in your arms?

It’s Global FPIES day, if you haven’t heard of FPIES take a moment and educate yourself on this rare and often misdiagnosed condition. It definitely took us by surprise 14 years ago and is the very reason Kidzaid Australia was conceived.

FPIES is a rare condition* and raising awareness is essential!

Awareness helps to inspire medical practitioners to educate themselves about FPIES care management, to encourage researchers to examine mechanisms and potential causes, and to motivate communities to get creative in how they accommodate individuals with food allergies in schools, recreation centers, and community events.

Spark the conversation on social media with these tips and resources! https://fpiesfoundation.org/social-media-support-awareness/

*Research has been confirming that FPIES varies in severity of symptoms and reactions. FPIES may be the severe end of the Non-IgE Allergy Spectrum. Non-IgE allergies affect more individuals than once understood.

🩺 Fever & Viral Illness:

Fever is the body’s natural way of fighting infection.

Your child’s temperature will return to normal when the infection has completely gone.

This is the immune response and it is completely normal.

Our emergency department at Monash Medical Centre is currently experiencing extreme demand.

Non-life-threatening presentations will likely experience longer wait times as a result.

If you need urgent care, but it's non-life-threatening, please consider:

💻 Consult the Virtual Emergency Department 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

👉 Visit an Urgent Care Centre

☎️ Telephone NURSE-ON-CALL on 1300 60 60 24

💊 See a GP

Please see the link in our comments for all the information you need.

We want you to be seen as quickly as possible, so if you need care but it is not an emergency, please consider these alternative pathways to care.

In a life-threatening medical emergency, please call Triple Zero (000) or attend the emergency department.

Wait times at our emergency departments vary, as patients are seen in order of clinical urgency. The most sick or injured are always cared for first.

When a patient arrives at one of our emergency departments, they are assessed or 'triaged' for urgency and categorised on a scale from 1 to 5. Category 1 patients require immediate life-saving treatment, whereas Category 5 patients need non-urgent care.

Key points to remember:

Head injuries can be mild, moderate or severe.
Call an ambulance if your child has had a head injury involving high speeds or height, or if after a knock to the head they lose consciousness or vomit more than once.

Your child may develop a number of different symptoms in the weeks after a head injury. If your child develops any of the red flag symptoms described above, you should seek immediate medical attention.

The HeadCheck app can help manage concussion recovery at home and is freely available on the App store and Google store. HeadCheck is an interactive tool; the main benefit is allowing families to monitor children’s symptoms on a daily basis, and then providing examples of appropriate activities based on symptoms and age.
