We’re proud to share that last week, Dr Raghu Kini successfully performed Maryvale Private Hospital’s very first strabismus (squint) surgery.

This milestone marks the first time this procedure has been offered and performed in Gippsland. A big thank you to Dr Kini and his clinic, along with our dedicated theatre team, for making this service possible. It means patients can now access this specialised care closer to home, without the need to travel to Melbourne.

Maryvale Private Hospital has announced a significant milestone for eye care in the region, with the introduction of paediatric and adult strabismus surgery, commonly known as squint surgery, to be performed by Ophthalmologist Dr Raghu Kini.

This specialised procedure is a first for Gippsland, treating misaligned eyes, a condition where one eye turns inward toward the nose or outward toward the ear. In adults, the procedure can also correct double vision, significantly improving comfort and visual function.
Dr Kini said the addition of this service means children and families no longer need to travel to Melbourne for treatment, “it’s wonderful to be able to offer this surgery locally” Dr Kini said. “For children, strabismus can affect not only their vision but also their confidence and development at school and in social settings. Being able to correct that close to home is a huge step forward for families in Gippsland.”

Those experiencing ongoing eye misalignment, particularly children whose eyes remain misaligned despite other treatments, can now be referred by their optometrist or general practitioner to Dr Kini for assessment and, if suitable, strabismus surgery at Maryvale Private Hospital. Final gynaecology highlight: Dr Anuradha Sarkar.

Dr Anuradha (Anu) Sarkar completed her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in 1984 with honours in gynaecology and obstetrics. Anu then pursued a career in obstetrics & gynaecology in the Irish Republic where she completed her Diploma and proceeded to undertake specialist training in this specialty and completed a Fellowship from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 1998.

Emigrating to Australia in 2002, Anu worked at Monash and attained her Fellowship from the Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 2004.

Anu has been providing services to the Gippsland region since 2005 and holds public appointment at Bairnsdale Regional Health Service and Latrobe Regional Health as well as consulting and operating at Maryvale Private Hospital.

Gynaecology highlight: Dr Sandhya Gupta

Dr Sandhya Gupta is an experienced Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with over 30 years of clinical experience across India, Papua New Guinea and Australia.

Sandhya is a strong believer of women centered care and has a keen focus on gynaecologic laparoscopic surgery and cancer prevention strategies. Gynaecology highlight: Dr Haider Najjar

Dr Haider Najjar is an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist who graduated Medicine in 1992. He completed Obstetrics and Gynaecology training at Monash Medical Centre, where he also went on to complete a Fellowship in advanced Laparoscopic and Minimally Invasive surgery.

Dr Najjar’s particular niche of clinical interest is fertility surgery and complex laparoscopic procedures, especially those utilising single incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) and also robotic surgery.

As the co-founder of Create Health and Create Fertility, he understands the complexities of infertility and provides an individualised approach to his care and management for his patients. His major forte of expertise in surgical management of infertility includes advanced laparoscopic surgery and management of endometriosis and fibroids.

Dr Carolyn Wilde is a Gippsland local, finishing her schooling in Sale before completing a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at The University of Melbourne in 2004.

The majority of Carolyn’s Fellowship in Obstetrics and Gynaecology was completed at The Mercy Hospital for Women in Melbourne.

Carolyn’s interests include surgical procedures for menstrual disorders, treating endometriosis and menorrhagia as well as advanced laparoscopic surgery including hysterectomy, endometriosis surgery and infertility surgery.
