Oh HELLO there!! As per usual, it has been a loOOOng time in between posts....sorry, not sorry 😅 I seem to be going on one of those "spending time off social media" things....ALL the time. And...I like it.

Let me be totally honest....I'm just not an IG gal. I'm a Naturopath, business owner , employee , wife, mum, friend, sister, b***y shaker, lover of food and espresso martinis and the list goes on. But IG lover and frequenter? I am not. 🤷‍♀️

So! I am jumping on to say HI, and YES I am still absolutely right here, and seeing all my beautiful patients on a weekly basis, working on all things your health. I love nothing more than helping people thrive, outside and in 🩷

Today, we talk about REST DAYS. When I was in the midst of my ED, resting was a foreign term. Allow my body to rest and incorporate days of no high intensity exercise into my week!? I just couldn't allow myself to do it due to my biggest fear: weight gain. Coupled with under-eating and undernourishment, my poor body and mind suffered BIG time.⁠

Fast forward the clock, having been in recovery for 5+ years, I LOVE resting and quite frankly, want more of it! Part of my recovery journey (with the help of my glorious Psychologist) was incorporating rest days into my week and also reducing the intensity of the exercise I was doing on the days I did choose to exercise (and doing movement I actually enjoyed and wanted to do). This my friends, was where the magic started to happen. My periods became like clockwork and I slowly learnt how to;⁠

- stop punishing my body through exercise,⁠
- allow myself the very much NEEDED rest days from high intensity exercise,⁠
- enjoy movement and exercise for all the great things it brought me. And here I am talking movement/blood flow/organ functioning, bone health, strength, happiness, overall health and well-being....NOT weight loss.⁠

Guys and girls....we need our rest. LADIES who have lost their period to something similar: If you want your periods to kick back in for good...this is paramount. ⁠

I know this isn't easy for some to hear ❤ and don't get me wrong....I still move my body on my rest days (because our bodies need to move) but it is more a gentle stroll, stretch session, or walk with my husband/friend. Perhaps a swim at the beach.⁠ You feel me?⁠


And....we also just need more rest, more down time, less stress, less fast-paced action in our lives. Something for us all to work on 🩷

So I was out with some adorable humans the other week and found myself giving one of the guys a serious screentime-before-bed peptalk🤣 (he did ask for advice...I don't just Naturopath-talk at my friends when we are out, I promise).⁠

Any patient that walks in my door who is having issues getting to sleep, staying a sleep, daytime tiredness etc.. there are a bunch of factors to address...yet one of the most simple and effective factors is...⁠

**REDUCING SCREEN TIME BEFORE BED!!⁠**

Did you know:⁠

😴 Looking at a blue light before bed significantly reduces our bodies ability to produce melatonin (our sleep hormone).⁠

😴 Ideally we are not looking at any screens 2 hours before bed (at least 1 hour)⁠

😴 First thing in the morning, we want natural sunlight to hit our eyes (not a screen) - as this helps promote the body's production of cortisol, our awake hormone!⁠

So step numero uno if you are having issues sleeping. Reassess your screen time!⁠

What can you do instead? Anything that is not on a screen. Read? Puzzle? Actually talk to any humans you may live with? Meal prep? Bake? Crosswords? Journal? Craft?⁠

Do you struggle with Restless Legs Syndrome?⁠ 🦵I recently did a reel on this also.⁠

You know that jittery feeling in your legs, especially at night time, that makes you want to MOOOOVEEEEE and shake your legs!?⁠

In clinic (and from personal experience 🙋‍♀️), I find restless legs are generally caused by these 3 main things;⁠

1. Nutritional deficiencies - Iron, Vitamin D or Magnesium⁠

2. Sleep deprivation/fatigue (could be from low iron!)⁠

3. Certain gut conditions!

So any patient of mine that walks in the door and struggles with restless legs, I want to get a blood test done to check their iron + vitamin D + magnesium, I want to know what their sleep is like AND I want to know what their gut health is like. Particular gut testing may be warranted. ⁠

One of my secrets and promises to you. I will NEVER advocate 'weight loss'. You will never hear those two words put together in a sentence, come out of my mouth (other than in this post). Why? For SO many reasons. I don't even know where to start. But to sum it up....I strongly believe it is not a helpful or healthy wellness goal. The amount of negative energy that surrounds those two little powerful words, is endless. 'Weight loss' is a negative goal, and I do not and will not promote that. Ever. ❤⁠

If you are desperate for a hardcore "weight loss program" - I am not your gal. Weight loss is not why I am here.⁠

But! WEIGHT RESTORATION?? Yes! I am right here to help you with that, to help get you to the place where you are functioning at your very best, mentally and physically. I am super passionate in fact about helping beautiful souls GAIN what they need to, to bring them back to their normal, where they are able to THRIVE, both mentally and physically. ❤⁠

We must learn to appreciate and love all that we are (easier said than done, I know), nourishing ourselves and our cells on a daily basis. ⁠

THAT is what it is all about. We live once. And mark my words, I will not be lying on my death bed thinking "I'm so glad I weighed x...my main achievement and purpose in life'"....and I hope you won't be too.⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠

Practicing what I preach today and eating my lunch outside, soaking up the delicious sun 🌞

Why?⁠

🌞 Because we were not designed to sit on our butts all day, inside, on a screen.⁠
🌞 Because we NEED daily sunshine for Vitamin D absorption (and other cool stuff too!).⁠
🌞 Because eating lunch outside on a day like today is way better than inside.⁠
🌞 Because it's nice to take a moment, stop, nourish, breathe and watch the world go by.

Have I made my point clear? Get outside and smell the flowers! Naturopath's orders.⁠

Let's chat protein. I have to start by saying, when it comes to food...just eat it. Every. Single. Day. Hungry? Eat some food. Breakfast time? Eat food. Peckish mid-afternoon? You guessed it, food. We MUST nourish every single cell, organ and organ system in our body (mental + physical) so we can THRIVE 🩷

We hear SO much about our diet – what we “should” and “shouldn’t” eat. And quite frankly, so much of the advice around diets and food out there can be damaging. In my humble opinion, healthy eating = eating foods every day. Eating the right VOLUME + VARIETY of foods and REGULARLY, every day.

In saying the above, a question I get asked often, is what does a nourishing plate look like? The first thing I will always start with is PROTEIN.

Among its many roles, protein helps regulate blood glucose levels, providing us with energy throughout the day and plays a big role in repairing and regenerating EVERY CELL in our body. Basically any patient that walks in my office, we are making sure they are eating enough protein.

Including a protein-rich food such as seafood, lean meat, organic cage-free eggs, legumes, organic tofu/tempeh, full-fat dairy (if tolerated) or nuts + seeds with each meal and snack is what we want to aim for. A ‘good’ serve of protein depends on the individual! Yet, as a very rough guide, it will fit inside the palm of your hand (give or take). For example, 2 eggs at breakfast or a palm sized portion of good quality meat/seafood at lunch.

This photo has way more than a palm size portion of protein - egg, goats cheese and beans. Does that matter? No. Was it delicious and filling? Yes.
