Reading difficulties in children impact their ability to expand their vocabulary and access new knowledge. This gap between struggling readers and their peers continues to widen significantly as schooling continues. This can impact children's confidence, self esteem and academic engagement.

✨Early Intervention is key✨

If your child is struggling to read by year one they may benefit from individualised support to assist them to develop their literacy skills.

Speech Pathologists are one of the professionals that can assess and provide intervention for children's reading skills.

Feel free to get in touch if you would like to chat about how I can help!

Visual timetables

Visual timetables are a wonderful support for children with language difficulties to understand the sequence of their day. I often use them in therapy to support my clients to understand what activities we will be doing.

However, sometimes I don’t have the pictures I need and don’t have a computer, printer, and laminator handy. Rather than abandon visuals altogether a simple picture on a whiteboard, post-it or piece of paper can help the child understand what will be happening “first, next and last”

You could try this at home to support your child’s understanding. If you do let me know how it goes 

Supporting your child’s language

This is a story I often tell families I work with. A few years ago, I was staying with my husband’s family in Portugal who only speak Portuguese, which I only know a few words of. One day his aunty came out and said “pegue as roupas” (cue very blank look from me), she proceeded to repeat it louder which did not help. However eventually she pointed to the clothes on the line and just said “roupas”. I finally understood that she meant ‘clothes’.

This experience helped me understand how our little ones feel when we say lots of words quickly at them and expect them to understand. To help make words easier it is important that we:

Slow down
Emphasise the important word
Use short phrases
Show (by pointing etc.)

Home practice idea for ‘s’ sounds

If your child is still getting the hang of trying to keep their tongue behind their teeth when making their ‘s’ sound try practising their ‘s’ words for 3-5 mins in front of the mirror just before cleaning their teeth.

Being able to see what their tongue is doing will help them get it right and the evidence shows that short and daily practice sessions will help them achieve their goals quicker.

Speech sound disorders

Errors in children’s speech can be caused by different underlying causes. Some of these can include:

- Phonological delay or disorder – this is a rule-based disorder where they have not learnt the correct rule for what sound to use e.g. ‘tar’ instead of ‘car’
- Articulation disorder – this is when they have difficulty moving their articulators (tongue, jaw etc.) into the correct position e.g. a lisp
- Childhood apraxia of speech – this is a difficulty voluntarily organising the muscle movements to produce speech sounds and putting these sounds together to form a word.

A speech pathologist can conduct a comprehensive assessment to identify the cause of a child’s speech disorder in order to provide the appropriate treatment. Ensuring you have an accurate diagnosis allows for effective and efficient therapy.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any concerns with your child’s speech.

Are you not sure how a paediatric speech pathologist can support your child?

Often it is thought that speech pathologists only help with children who have unclear speech or children who stutter, but we do so much more. Here are a few other areas I can help with:

✨ When children have difficulty understanding language, for example have difficulty following directions, understanding questions or learning new concepts.
✨Children that are delayed developing spoken language to express ideas and communicate with other people. This includes using a range of vocabulary and correct sentence structures
✨When children have difficulty developing the skills for reading and writing.
✨Children who have difficulty with social skills
✨Supporting children develop the skills they need to be ready for school
✨Child who have difficulty eating, or have a limited range of food that they eat.
✨Developing and implementing alternative communication systems where needed
✨Most importantly empowering families with the skills they need to support their child’s communication.

With the new year starting I thought I would take the time to reintroduce myself.

I’m Jess, the owner and speech pathologist at Jessica Alves Speech Pathology (the name might give that away 😃 )

I graduated with Masters of Speech Pathology in 2015 and have been working in Goulburn and the Southern Highlands since 2017.

I have a special interest in working with pre-schoolers and early school age children, and I especially enjoy treating children with speech sound disorders and stuttering. I also love to have a chat about all things speech pathology so feel free to get in contact if you have any questions.

I opened my clinic last year and have absolutely loved meeting and working with all the families I have met so far. In 2022 I am looking forward to all the goals we will be able to achieve together and all the new families I will be able to support as well.

✨ Your Preschooler’s Speech ✨

Current research indicates that by 3 years old an unfamiliar listener (e.g. not Mum or Dad) should understand 75% of what your child says. They will still have some speech errors and sometimes Mum or Dad will need to help others understand what they are saying but they can get their message across with words most of the time.

By 4 years old an unfamiliar person should understand 95% of what your child says with very little help from Mum or Dad needed to communicate with others. At 5 years old 100% of what your child is saying should be understood by everybody.

Early intervention is often best! If you feel that your child is having difficulty communicating and their speech is not as clear as other children their age please feel free to have chat with me.

I have both assessment and therapy spots available now - without a waitlist. Get in contact via my email or my website to book an appointment.
