Not all “tight hip” feelings come from the same muscle.
The Thomas test is a clinical assessment used to accurately determine which specific structure is contributing to the tightness.

1. Thigh lifts up off the table, it usually means the main hip flexor muscle at the front of your hip is tight

2. Thigh stays down but your knee starts to straighten, it suggests tightness in one of the front thigh muscles (quadriceps)

3. Leg drifts out to the side, it can indicate tightness in the band of tissue along the outside of your thigh (ITB).

Figuring out which structure is tight is important — otherwise, one might focus on the wrong muscle and delay recovery.
