After chatting last week about the importance of regular skin to skin contact and access to breastfeeding within the first 48 hours after birth, I also feel it is really important to talk about the first 6 weeks!
Baby's are not born with a routine. They do not have a circadian rhythm like adults. They sleep very differently to adults. They have a very immature digestive system.
They cry a lot. They need comforting a lot.
Your baby has spent 9 months growing in your uterus, being continually hugged, being continually fed, rocked and cradled.
Your baby doesn't know what it wants, and neither do you probably!
The first 6 weeks is a steep learning curve - be kind to yourself, your partner, your family and most of all to your baby.
Keep your baby warm, sweet and pink. Feed them a lot, frequently. Cuddle them a lot. And do the same to yourself.
If you need a little more reassurance, have a read of my blog https://www.withyoumidwifery.com.au/understanding-your-baby-or-trying-to/

WORLD BREASTFEEDING WEEK 1 - 7 AUG 2022

A global campaign to raise awareness and galvanise action on themes relating to breastfeeding.
The theme for 2022 is :
"Step up for Breastfeeding - Education and Support"
As a Midwife and Lactation Consultant, one of my key roles is education and support. Educating women and families about the benefits of breastfeeding, how lactation works and getting things started, in turn provides support and help to many women in my local community.

Birthing your baby with calm confidence.

About Lainey is a low and high risk pregnancy midwife specialist and has practiced for over 15 years as a HypnoBirthing® and Calmbirth® practitioner. She has assisted thousands of couples through their birth journey and into parenthood. Bub and Bloom® provides a comprehensive set of antenatal classes developed for couples to reduce anxiety and fear surrounding labour and birth, allowing couples to approach birth together with new understanding and confidence.

Lainey has worked as a clinical specialist in a birthing centre run by midwives at a large hospital in Melbourne. She works with women wishing to achieve a natural birth (including water births) after an uncomplicated pregnancy.

Lainey has worked as a midwife for over 20 years, specializing in labour and birth. In addition Lainey has extensive experience working with women whose pregnancies are considered high risk. She has had the pleasure of teaching couples from all walks of life and has a large referral base from many Melbourne hospitals and obstetricians from Cabrini, Monash, Sandringham, The Bays and Peninsula Private on the Mornington Peninsula. She has prepared a number of these same obstetricians for their own birthing journey’s and will continue to offer the best possible service to all couples under her guidance.

Having an avid interest in both antenatal education and birthing, Lainey prepares couples for any challenges, providing a thorough, realistic and autonomous approach to birth. Couples are taught how to be fear free, trusting in the body and trusting that each will play an important role for a gentle journey of their baby into the world.
