We created social groups to address the isolation many young adults with disabilities experience. By letting participants choose activities, we ensure they can have fun, build friendships, and develop skills in a relaxed, age-appropriate setting.
We initially started with a small group that meets on Tuesdays, primarily focusing on building friendships and exploring arts, crafts, music, and photography—all interests they chose to explore. On Wednesdays, we host our tech group, which began by fixing gaming consoles and creating an entertainment space, selecting equipment based on cost and specifications. They enjoy gaming but also want to learn practical skills like BBQ cooking, bike building, and planning outings to arcades and restaurants in the future, when everyone is ready. Each group plans future sessions together, allowing participants to choose activities in advance based on their own interests and goals.
We have found that young people don’t want to color in or go on yet another walk with someone who isn’t their age, and many miss out on typical outings like going to the movies with friends. For some, this isn’t possible due to disabilities, social isolation, communication challenges, anxiety, or vulnerability. Our goal is to deliver these experiences in a supported, fun environment that builds skills and confidence, allowing participants to connect with others outside of home or school—It’s truly exciting to see the engagement and excitement around seeing friends and having an actual night out or catch up.
Tonight’s session features two episodes of “The Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime” (voted top choice, rated PG-13, with some scenes of strong violence), with pizza, gaming on PlayStation consoles, and an art area. Participants can freely explore each space, supported by our experienced staff, who have backgrounds in Disability Education, Positive Behaviour Support, NDIS Coordination, and Community volunteer-based groups. Each team member also has skills in extra areas like trades, music, and art, enhancing the support provided.
All sessions include detailed notes that contribute to a comprehensive Provider report. This report tracks participants' progress and provides valuable insights for the NDIS and Providers, supporting participants’ ongoing development and review processes.
