FUNGAL NAILS
Fungal nail infections are a common condition that can cause nails to become thick, discoloured, and brittle over time.

Onychomycosis (fungal nail infection) often develops in warm, moist environments like sweaty shoes or communal areas.

Treatment options may include:
• Topical antifungal medications
• Prescription oral medication
• Medical nail thinning or debridement
• Laser treatment (in some clinics)
• Nail surgery in more severe or persistent cases

The sooner it’s treated, the easier it is to manage and prevent it from spreading to other nails.

If you’ve noticed changes in your nails, we can assess the infection and recommend the best treatment for you.

SHOCKWAVE THERAPY

Tendon pain can seriously limit your movement and quality of life.

Shockwave therapy is a quick, non-invasive treatment designed to stimulate healing and restore function. It works by using high-pressure acoustic waves to boost collagen production, improve blood flow, break down calcium build-up, and reduce chronic inflammation.

In podiatry, it’s commonly used for heel and arch pain, including plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, shin splints, and some cases of arthritis.

We offer shockwave therapy at our clinic as part of a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to your needs.

Most people need 3–6 sessions for lasting results, with many noticing relief along the way.

⚠️ Not suitable for children, pregnant women, or those with blood clotting disorders, on blood thinners, or with infection or cancer at the treatment site.

If you’re struggling with ongoing foot or tendon pain, contact the clinic to discuss whether shockwave therapy is right for you.

Did you know skin cancer can occur on the feet?

Skin cancers don’t only appear on the face or body, they can also develop on the feet, including the tops of the feet, soles, between the toes, and around or under the nails. Because these areas are often overlooked, changes can go unnoticed for a long time.

Keep an eye out for new spots, changes in colour or shape, dark patches, or sores that don’t heal.

Protect your feet by:
• Applying sunscreen to the tops of your feet when wearing sandals or open shoes
• Avoiding excessive sun exposure
• Checking your feet and skin regularly (yourself or by a dermatologist)
• Seeing your podiatrist or GP if you notice anything unusual

Your feet work hard every day. Don’t forget to protect their skin too.

🌟 Get a clearer picture of your circulation health with the MESI Toe-Brachial Index (TBI) test! 🌟

Did you know that poor circulation in your feet can often go unnoticed — especially if you have diabetes or other health conditions affecting your blood vessels?
The MESI system allows us to measure your Toe-Brachial Index (TBI) — a quick, non-invasive test that helps detect early signs of Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD), which can affect wound healing and overall foot health.

💡 Why this test matters:

It helps identify circulation problems that might not show up in standard ankle tests.

It’s fast and completely painless — results are ready in about a minute.

Early detection means you and your GP can take steps to prevent serious complications.

👣 The MESI system gives us accurate, digital readings that can be shared directly with your GP to support your ongoing care and treatment plan.

If you have diabetes, cold feet, slow-healing wounds, or tingling or numbness in your toes — this simple test can provide valuable information about your vascular health.

📅 Ask us today about booking your Toe-Brachial Index test and take a proactive step toward better circulation and healthier feet.

⚠️ Ingrown Toenails: Don’t Ignore the Warning Signs! 👣

Have you noticed redness, swelling or tenderness along the edge of your toenail? You might be dealing with a common but potentially serious condition — an ingrown toenail.

An ingrown toenail happens when the edge of the nail grows into the surrounding skin, causing pain, inflammation, and often infection. What starts as a mild annoyance can quickly become a painful, ongoing issue — especially if not treated early.

🔍 What to Look Out For:

Pain or tenderness along the nail edge

Red, swollen skin around the toenail

Hard or thickened skin at the nail fold

Pus or fluid discharge (a clear sign of infection)

Although it most often affects the big toe, ingrown nails can occur on any of your toes.

👟 Who’s at Risk?

Ingrown toenails can affect anyone, but they’re especially common in:

Teenagers (especially during growth spurts)

Athletes and runners

People who wear tight or narrow footwear

Those who trim their nails too short or curved

🚨 At-Risk Individuals: Take Extra Care

If you live with diabetes, poor circulation, or nerve damage, even a minor ingrown toenail can lead to serious complications, such as:

Delayed healing

Skin and bone infections

In severe cases, ulcers or even amputation

That’s why early treatment and professional care are essential.

👣 How Can We Help?

Podiatrists are experts in diagnosing and treating ingrown toenails. We can:

Safely remove the ingrown portion of the nail

Treat any underlying infection

Provide long-term solutions, such as nail bracing or minor nail surgery

Offer personalised advice to prevent it happening again

✅ Don’t Wait for It to Get Worse

If you think you’ve got an ingrown toenail, book an appointment today. Early treatment means less pain, faster healing, and a lower risk of infection.

👣 Protect Your Feet This Summer! ☀️

As the weather warms up, many of us start swapping out our shoes for sandals or thongs (flip-flops) — but not all summer footwear is created equal!

If you’re planning to be active — whether it’s walking, shopping, sightseeing, or attending outdoor events — it’s important to wear footwear that supports your feet properly. Poor footwear choices can lead to a variety of issues including:

🔹 Heel pain (plantar fasciitis)
🔹 Arch strain or flat feet
🔹 Blisters, calluses, or corns
🔹 Ankle sprains or instability
🔹 Long-term joint problems in knees, hips, and back

👎 Flip-flops (thongs) offer little to no arch support, shock absorption, or stability. They're best reserved for very short-term wear — like walking poolside, in communal showers, or at the beach. A 2010 study in Gait & Posture found that flip-flops significantly alter gait and increase stress on the foot and lower leg, potentially leading to pain or injury with prolonged use.

✅ Instead, choose supportive sandals that:

Have arch support

Feature adjustable straps to secure your foot

Offer cushioned soles to absorb shock

Provide a contoured footbed to promote natural foot alignment

Think of your footwear as equipment: the right tool for the right job. Sandals should suit your activity level — just like you wouldn’t wear stilettos to hike, you shouldn’t wear flip-flops for long walks or errands.

✨ Pro Tip: If you’re unsure which sandals are right for your foot type or lifestyle, chat to us— your feet will thank you!

👟 Your feet carry you all day, every day. Let’s treat them with the care they deserve this summer.

Sharing my weekend experience with ankle pain treated with Prolo therapy. Thank you to my colleague from Prohealth Podiatry for trusting me with this injection therapy.

Prolotherapy is the injection of a proliferant (prolo= growth) solution to stimulate the natural inflammatory process that encourages tissue repair and pain reduction.

These injections are useful in at least 4 types of lesions
1. Enthesis strain – treat by touching bone gently with the needle
2. Tendinosis – treat by injecting next to tendon to inhibit VEGF
3. Chronic results of old injuries – treat all tender points – relieve pain and stabilise joints
4. Neuropathic pain: Neural prolotherapy = near nerve injections

We often use Comfort-in injectors to make the process less traumatic.

Contact us at Precision Plus Podiatry on 3349 9213 if you would like to consider Prolo therapy as a management option.

Although it is not summer anymore, feet need to be checked.
While sun exposure is the leading cause for most skin cancers, skin cancers of the feet are more often related to viruses, exposure to chemicals, chronic inflammation or irritation, or inherited traits. Be sure to check your feet regularly, including in between your toes, for any noticeable changes. Skin cancers of the feet can present differently than skin cancers on other body part which is why it’s critical to seek treatment from a podiatrist.

When to Visit a Podiatrist
Podiatrists are uniquely trained as lower extremity specialists to recognize and treat abnormal conditions on the skin of the lower legs and feet. Skin cancers affecting the feet may have a very different appearance from those arising on the rest of the body. For this reason, a podiatrist's knowledge and clinical training is of extreme importance for patients for the early detection of both benign and malignant skin tumours.
Learn the ABCDs of melanoma. If you notice a mole, bump, or patch on the skin that meets any of the following criteria, see a podiatrist immediately:
• Asymmetry - If the lesion is divided in half, the sides don't match
• Borders - Borders look scalloped, uneven, or ragged.
• Colour - There may be more than one colour. These colours may have an uneven distribution.
• Diameter – The lesion is wider than a pencil eraser (greater than 6 mm).
To detect other types of skin cancer, look for spontaneous ulcers and non-healing sores, bumps that crack or bleed, nodules with rolled or “donut-shaped” edges, or scaly areas.

Diagnosis and Treatment
Your podiatrist will investigate the possibility of skin cancer both through a clinical examination and with the use of a skin biopsy. A skin biopsy is a simple procedure in which a small sample of the skin lesion is obtained and sent to a specialized laboratory where a skin pathologist will examine the tissue in greater detail. If a lesion is determined to be cancerous, your podiatrist will recommend the best course of treatment for your condition.

Prevention
Prevention of skin cancer on the feet and ankles is like any other body part. Limit sun exposure, and make sure to apply appropriate sunscreen when you are outdoors, and your feet and ankles are exposed.

Do you think you might be experiencing pain caused by a bunion? A bunion is commonly referred to as a “bump” on the joint at the base of the big toe that forms when the bone or tissue at the big toe joint moves out of place.

Bunions can be painful, unsightly, and in some cases debilitating, but you can combat the worst bunion symptoms with your footwear choices! While shoes do not cause a bunion, they do aggravate feet already prone to developing one.

Here are the symptoms that you can check for before you make an appointment with your podiatrist but if in doubt come in and we can assess your feet for you
