✨ Our incredible patient Jo’s story ✨

Earlier this year, Jo was diagnosed with ovarian cancer on the 28th of February. After nine weeks of weekly chemotherapy, major abdominal surgery, and another nine weeks of treatment (finishing on the 28th of August), she was fortunate to reach No Evidence of Disease (NED). 🎗️

Jo acknowledges how lucky she is to reach NED, knowing many women diagnosed with ovarian cancer never get to this point.

Ovarian cancer is known to be one of the most challenging gynaecological cancers — often diagnosed late due to vague symptoms and carrying a very high risk of recurrence. Around 1,800 women in Australia are diagnosed each year.

Common symptoms can include:
• Abdominal bloating or swelling
• Feeling full quickly
• Unexplained weight loss
• Pelvic discomfort
• Extreme fatigue
• Lower back pain
• Constipation

🤸🏼‍♂️ In mid–late August, Jo chose to begin Pilates with us for three key reasons:
• To support her recovery from major surgery
• To stay as physically and mentally strong as possible after treatment
• To ensure she’s in the best health she can be should she ever have to face treatment again

With the sun rising earlier, many of us are getting back into running season — but before you hit the road, here are some physio-approved tips to help you run strong and stay injury-free 👟💪

1️⃣ Gradual Load Progression
Avoid big jumps in distance or intensity. Follow the “10% rule” — increase your total weekly load by no more than 10% to let your tissues adapt.
2️⃣ Strength Training = Injury Prevention
Strong legs, hips, and core make for efficient and resilient runners. Include exercises like:
    •    Calf raises (for Achilles and calf endurance)
    •    Single-leg squats or step-downs (for control)
    •    Glute bridges or hip thrusts (for stability)
    •    Core work (for running posture)
3️⃣ Warm Up with Movement
Dynamic warm-ups (leg swings, lunges, skips) help prepare muscles and joints — static stretches are better post-run.
4️⃣ Prioritise Recovery
Rest days are training days too! Incorporate mobility work, foam rolling, and adequate sleep to allow tissues to repair.

MEET HAYDEN 👋🏽

Hayden is a Remedial Massage Therapist who graduated in 2016 with a Diploma of Remedial Massage. 💆🏽‍♂️ His treatments are tailored to each client, combining myofascial release, remedial massage, PNF stretching, and trigger point therapy to ease pain, improve movement, and support recovery. Hayden has worked with a wide variety of clients — from athletes and triathletes to office workers with postural strain, women during pregnancy and postpartum, older adults wanting to stay active, and people simply looking for a personalised approach to their health and wellbeing. 🏌️‍♂️

With a background in endurance long-distance cycling and medium-to-long distance running, Hayden understands first-hand how important it is to maintain the body. After a cycling accident in 2019, he discovered Pilates during his rehabilitation and found it to be one of the most effective and enjoyable ways to restore movement and recover. 🚴

Away from the clinic, Hayden is always on the go — whether trail running, cycling on the Wahoo trainer, or training at the gym. He is also studying a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, set to graduate in December 2027. 🐾 When he’s not exercising or with his books, you’ll often find him at a local café, coffee in hand, studying or planning his next adventure. 📚
