🌙 Meet Anke 🌙

Hi all! I’m Anke👋🏼 and I’m excited to come onboard this wonderful Bush Magic adventure!

I am an artist and I love the outdoors! I love combining the two- making things from what is found, using drawing to help me to see what is there, collaborating with the environment in exploration and play, to make art.

I’m quite new to Wollongong after living in Mparntwe, Alice Springs for about 6 ½ years. This was a formative, and rich time for me. While I was there, I had the joy of supporting Indigenous Elders to make trips back to Country after time away due to illness. We also went on hunting and gathering trips, looking for ‘Maku’, Witchetty Grubs, then making a  campfire to cook them up.  At other times I supported artists, working in Aboriginal Art Center’s, where the most beautiful art was made.

At the moment, when I’m not working with Bush Magic, I work as an artist, in ceramics, drawing, and painting (). My working life has been varied, working with children and adults, across countries and places, in roles from healthcare, community work, to artist support and volunteer coordination...

I look forward to getting to know you all, seeing what fun we can have, what we can find, and what we can create together.

Say hello to Anke, we’re excited to have her join our team 🌿

Join us for a special community picnic day as we celebrate what would have been Don Alexander’s 100th birthday 🌿✨

Many years ago, Don secured Don’s Farm for the Dapto Rotary Club with a vision: to create a space that the whole community could enjoy. Today, that legacy continues — and we’re so grateful to be part of it.

Bring the family, pack a picnic rug, and enjoy a beautiful day out in nature (for FREE!) 💚

🎶 Music
🌳 Guided nature walk
🎨 Children’s activities
🌭 Sausage sizzle

There is plenty of space to play, explore and connect.

We feel truly honoured to learn, grow and play at Don’s Farm through our bush school programs. What a gift this place is to our community 🌱

Risky play isn’t dangerous — it’s necessary.

Climbing, balancing, whittling, exploring — these moments of challenge teach safety, judgement, and confidence. Through experiences like these, children learn to assess risk, adapt, and trust their own instincts. Every wobble, scrape, and triumph helps them build real-world skills that last a lifetime. Out in nature, they discover not just what they can do, but who they are becoming.

When we step back and let children take the lead, we give them the gift of growth — courage, self-trust, and the joy of mastering something on their own.

🌳 MEET ROD 🌳

Hi I’m Rod 👋🏼

After recently retiring from full-time work, I wanted to find a way to keep doing what I love most — helping kids build confidence, resilience, and a genuine love for the outdoors. That’s what drew me to Bush Magic Adventure Therapy. I’m passionate about supporting young people as they explore, take on new challenges, and discover what they’re capable of in nature’s classroom.

I’ve been a Scout Leader for 20 years across all sections, including time as a Group Leader. Those years have given me a deep appreciation for the power of outdoor experiences to shape character, build leadership and teamwork, and spark curiosity. I love seeing kids step outside their comfort zones, try something new, and realise they can do far more than they thought possible.

In my spare time you’ll usually find me bushwalking, camping, kayaking, cycling, rock climbing, out on a motorbike or working on my latest DIY project. My family and I also volunteer as wildlife carers, raising orphaned wombats, kangaroos, and wallabies — it’s another way we stay connected to the natural world and give back to the environment we love.

I’ve always believed that the best learning happens through play, exploration, and a bit of mud under your boots. Being part of the Bush Magic team gives me the chance to share that belief, helping kids grow stronger, braver, and more connected to themselves and the world around them.

Welcome Rod to the BMAT team 👋🏼

Wow, what an incredible weekend we had at Woodfest Wollongong!

A huge thank you to everyone who joined our Crafting Wooden Treasures workshops — it was amazing to see so many curious hands, creative minds, and both new and familiar faces giving it a go.

There’s something truly special about shaping wood with your own hands. 🪵
Whittling isn’t just fun — it builds fine motor skills, boosts focus, encourages patience, and sparks creativity. Studies show that hands-on crafts like these can reduce stress, improve mood, and deepen our connection to the natural world.

We loved seeing everyone’s unique creations come to life — each one a little piece of bush magic!

Enjoy these beautiful handmade treasures, crafted with care and imagination.

☀️ MEET FOX ☀️

G’day! I’m Fox, a 30yr old nature enthusiast. I grew up inland in Wagga, and moved to the gong in my early twenties. I’ve worked in trade roles for about a decade, notably as an aircraft maintenance engineer. Since my time on the tools, I’ve picked up an arts degree, majoring in environmental humanities at UOW. Over the past few years, I’ve been providing independent disability support.

Recently, I was living on the Sunshine Coast, where I worked as a safety supervisor at a high-wire/zipline adventure park. Before moving back down south, I took myself on an extensive urban hike. I walked all the way from Byron Bay to Sydney. This journey took me 45 days, in which I covered 900km and took over a million steps! I carried all my gear and made camp where I could most nights.

I worked with groups of kids in my previous role, ensuring they remained safe whilst navigating the tree tops course. I love the enthusiasm and authenticity little ones effortlessly maintain. I’m a stoked surfer, keen climber, avid gardener, eager builder, and I can do a pretty mean handstand.

Welcome Fox to the BMAT team 👋🏼
