Ever wondered how GLP 1’s like Ozempic and Mounjaro actually work?
GLP 1 is a natural hormone produced in the gut to regulate blood sugar and appetite by signalling to our brain that we are full.
While these medications are great at reducing inflammation and balancing blood sugar, I often see patients eating significantly less due to appetite suppression. While they cause reductions in fat, they also contribute to reductions in muscle. This is why it’s vital to ensure we are eating adequate protein to reduce muscle loss, while increasing weight training to preserve strength.
As GLP1’s slow gastric emptying, you may find you are experiencing increased nausea, reflux, bloating and constipation. There are tools we use in clinic to mitigate this, to ensure we support gut motility and health.
