Depending on the exercise intensity and what the goal is, will determine when or if it's necessary to have a source of protein around your workout.
The anabolic window is over hyped, if your total daily protein intake is adequate more is not necessarily better, you may be sacrificing energy to fuel your workouts or aid in better recovery or get in more micro nutrients essential for health.
If your sole focus is muscle growth then I'd advise protein post workout for a few reasons.
Spike in MPS (muscle protein synthesis) to promote building and repairing of muscle tissue.
Less chance of stomach discomfort.
If you haven't had protein for a few hours prior to your session then it may be an idea to have some pre workout depending on length of session and time between meals.

Have a ripper of a day!
