MONTHLY STUDIO THEME: Samtoṣa ~ contentment 🌿

This month at The Dharma House, we are exploring Samtoṣa (pronounced ‘santosha’) ~ contentment.

In the Yoga Sūtras, the great Sage Patañjali teaches Samtoṣa as one of the Niyamas: inner observances that support a balanced and meaningful life. At its heart, Samtoṣa is the ability to experience ease and appreciation exactly where we are, without needing everything to be different in order to feel at peace.

As we move toward the end of the year, life naturally gets faster, fuller, and a little louder. It’s easy to slip into striving ~ more plans, more pressure, and expectations. Samtoṣan invites us to soften that urge and find joy in simplicity: the breath, a quiet moment, the feeling of arriving on the mat, or the calm pause between movements.

Contentment doesn’t mean settling or giving up on growth. It means recognising the goodness that already exists, and letting that be enough for a moment. In practice, Samtoṣa feels like exhaling deeply, softening the shoulders, releasing the jaw, and letting ourselves rest in the present.

Throughout November, our classes will offer space to slow down, breathe, and reconnect with the quiet sweetness of everyday life.

We look forward to exploring Samtoṣa with you! 🌿

“When the five senses and the mind are still, the Self reveals itself.” ~Katha Upanishad 🌿

As we move toward the end of the year, we often find life gets bigger… with more noise, more stimulation, more to do, more to be. Yoga gives us something important, a quiet space to turn inward.

Each time we come to practice, we soften the pull of the senses, return to our breath, and remember the part of us that isn’t rushed or overwhelmed.

Stillness isn’t an escape from life… it’s how we reconnect to ourselves within it.

We are here to hold you for practice over this period. 🙏🏽

(And a big welcome back to .langbein who will be back with you for Kirtan this weekend, and next week for Yin on Tuesday nights after his annual pilgrimage to study with his teacher in India!)

A little reminder that you don’t need to be flexible or fit in order to practice yoga:

“I CAN’T DO YOGA, I’M NOT FLEXIBLE ENOUGH.” 🤔

There is a common misconception about yoga that our bodies need to be a certain way in order to practice.

Did you know that ZERO ancient yogic scriptures mention anything about needing to be flexible? Flexibility is irrelevant to yoga. It may be a wonderful gradual bi-product of doing the physical poses, but poses are actually designed to liberate stuck energy in the body, and help us cultivate a calm and stable mind and comfortable seat so that we can meditate and live effective and fulfilling lives.

STABILITY is the most important aspect of physical postures: if that means using props or taking modifications, go for it. Through holding a posture steadily for a little bit longer (rather than pushing to limits and wobbling around) we cultivate a steady mind, which is essential on the spiritual path. That is what helps us transform life ‘off the mat’.

Yoga is for everyBODY ~ come chat with us to find which class, or path, would be best suited for you to begin with.

See you in the studio. 🙏🏽✨

Surrendering into life is not about taking our hands off the steering wheel and disregarding whatever happens next. It is instead about nurturing a deep trust that Life ultimately wants us to grow and succeed ~ and then consciously relinquishing the need to control everything, or to know all the answers, and allowing life to teach us, refine us, liberate us.

Yoga gives us the toolkit to carry ourselves through this process with grace, strength, courage, compassion, and faith.
What a gift.

See you on the mat for practice. ✨

WORKSHOP: EXPLORING TAROT & YOGA: 5pm Friday 17 October 🌿🎴✨ ~The Suit of Cups~

Are you intrigued by Tarot cards?

Used as an intuitive tool, they can provide insight into our deepest desires-inspiring and empowering us to bring them into existence.

Following the success of the first of Tarot Yoga workshops, join Kaz to dive deep into the suit of Cups; symbolic of the emotions.

Kaz will run a refresher of how to read Tarot cards intuitively before looking at a few of the cards in this suit, inspiring a Yang to Yin flow focusing on breath & alignment.

You’ll also have the chance to pull & interpret your own Tarot card. Attendance at the first Tarot workshop is not necessary.

Bookings essential.

FULL PRICE: $40

Patañjali’s Yoga Sūtra I.33 teaches that the mind becomes calm and clear when we cultivate:

🌿 Friendliness toward those who are happy
🌿 Compassion for those who suffer
🌿 Delight in the virtuous, and
🌿 Equanimity toward those who act unwisely.

Our relationships play a huge role in how we experience life and relate to the world around us. This sūtra is an invitation to bring awareness and presence into every relationship we hold.

And it’s another example of how Yoga truly is so much more than what we see happening on the mat. 🌿
