The correct answer to the most healthy, functional abdominal contraction when standing at ease (from the last post), is B! Soft and relaxed but with enough lift through the deep core and spinal muscles to create length in the spine.

Constant over contraction of the abdominal muscles can lead to many health issues including:
- faulty breath patterns
- neck, shoulder and upper back pain or injury
- lower back tension
- digestive issues
- constipation
- stress and anxiety
- a sense of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual ungrounding.

Can you spot the difference?
The first way strengthens the core muscles, contributing to better stabilisation of the spine and trunk, improving functionality and reducing pain across a range of conditions.
The second way also strengthens some of the core muscles but pushes out into the back and down on the pelvic floor, weakening it and potentially contributing to increased pain and a bulging abdomen.

Our Story

Esprit Pilates was founded by Melissa Franks back in 2009. After 18 years of dancing and dance teaching she felt the tremendous benefits of Pilates in her own body and began to see the outstanding results in her clients also.

We understand the value of good health, in particular the ability to move with ease, energy and without pain, in creating happy and conscious individuals. It is our belief that when you feel good in your body your mind is free to care about things bigger things - about your family, the people and planet around you. Your potential is on track to be realised. In short, when you are healthy and balanced you make better choices and live a better life. It is our vision that we help all our clients become pain-free, fit and well and in turn positively influence their lives and everyone they encounter.
