Leading expert in trauma research and treatment, Bessel van der Kolk writes in The Body Keeps the Score: "Trauma victims cannont recover until they become familiar with and befriend the sensations in their bodies. Remembering the verbal narrative while still being cut off from their physical selves does not lead to a full recovery from the trauma. Physical self-awareness is the first step in releasing the tyranny of the past".
Somatic therapy helps our clients learn to tolerate physical sensations, unwinding the traumatic shutdown responses, processing the past traumas and changing the brain by building new neural networks.

Love it !

I completely understand that you have been pushed from pillar to post looking for a solution for your physical and emotional pain. You have searched for answers with all the earnest tenacity of an ‘A’ Class student, BUT, this ‘fixing’ energy and perfectionist drive, simply inflames your nervous system further and keeps you in a victim narrative.

The solution lies on the other side of fear, which requires that you finally stop and make friends with yourself. Embrace everything about your own glorious, crazy, sensitive person and give yourself a break.

How about starting today by giving yourself a hug, some compassion and some gentle humour? Take the gas off your intensity, soothe instead of disapprove of yourself and just take one step at a time.

How would it be if today, for once, you stopped researching, stopped beating yourself up and welcomed today, whatever the weather ? Try it. Go Gently.

Is it normal to feel more anxious when my symptoms start to improve?
Yes.
It doesn’t happen to everyone, but it does happen to a lot of people.

The mindbody symptoms you’ve been experiencing have been expressing your anxiety and distress through your body. They’ve also been a distraction and a focus for your anxiety. When you’re busy worrying about your migraines/backache/pelvic pain, you don’t have much headspace left for worrying about other things. So it makes sense that when your symptoms ease your anxiety may increase for a while.

Also, if the emotional work of journalling, coaching or therapy is part of your healing process, remember that you’re turning towards a lot of difficult emotions that you’ve been suppressing/avoiding for a long time. You’re opening that can of worms that had been sealed shut. So of course, your nervous system will see that as a threat, and increased anxiety can be a result.

Finally, from a nervous system perspective we can view chronic pain or fatigue as a chronic freeze response. And when we come out of the freeze response we naturally move through the highly activated state fight/flight before we get back to the calm state of rest/digest/connect. The increased anxiety that some people experience as part of recovery is your nervous system coming out of freeze and moving through fight/flight. It’s normal, and it will pass if you keep doing the work.

This is so true, our stories in Sympathetic state are totally different when we are in a Ventral vagal state. eg: in Sympathetic, the world is scary, dangerous, fast, I am afraid, anxious, on guard. In ventral, the world is interesting, inviting, I am curious, calm etc......once we can start working with and recognising our stories, we can change our states

First comes the symptom, then comes the story. The story of your thoughts can sound like, “What did I do to cause this? Did I do too much yesterday?” Or, “I’m still not doing something right. That’s why I still have this symptom.” Whatever your thoughts sound like, you can intervene. Intervening involves recognizing that not all of your thoughts are true. They’re just thoughts. And as long as you recognize that your thoughts won’t hurt you, the less power they have over you.
