🔘 SIGNIFICANT GEOMAGNETIC STORM UNDERWAY
- AURORA SIGHTINGS POSSIBLE ACROSS

A heads-up for our stargazers out there - There's a good chance of an aurora show this evening as a result of a significant geomagnetic storm event with multiple Coronal Mass ejections (CME) directed at earth.

CMEs are eruptions of solar material and magnetic field from the sun. When a CME reaches Earth, it can cause a geomagnetic storm that sometimes produces an auroral display at high latitudes (close to the poles) in Earth’s northern and southern hemispheres. These auroral displays appear as colours in the night sky.

The forecast shows moderate to strong geomagnetic storm levels (G-scale) heading toward us.

Because we’re north of the typical aurora-zones, the display may be fainter or closer to the horizon but with this kind of activity it’s certainly worth keeping an eye on the sky.

Look after sunset, through to the early morning hours. When it’s darkest is when our chances are best.

The aurora might be visible in southern NSW or high-elevation inland where skies are dark and unobstructed. If you’re further north (e.g., Sydney metro), you’ll want very clear skies, minimal light pollution, and perhaps catch it with a camera as the camera can capture much more than the eye!
